Valbreso feta cheese, from France. I'm picky about my feta and will brave LA cross town traffic to purchase Greek feta (from
here) when making spanikopita, but the French stuff is fabulous for summer salads. It's creamier and milder than Greek feta and in a totally different ballpark from the cheaper Bulgaria feta that you see around.

Our Whole Foods stocks it for $10 a pound, but I recently found it at our local middle eastern market in bulk for $6 a pound. Sold.
{tomato salad}
Feta, tomato, basil + a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. We eat it with baguette or warm naan and call it dinner.
you make it sound fantastic - i'll have to expand our feta horizons! speaking of cheese, did you see the piece in this week's new yorker about a 117-year-old piece of cheese? it was stored for awhile in a piece of foil and an unmarked envelope. fascinating.
ReplyDeleteYum!! Love feta sprinkled on broccoli too :)
ReplyDeletethat's my kind of dinner, looks incredible. i also blogged about french cheese today! xo
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh yum! David Lebovitz also turned me on to the feta + sage leaf + prosciutto concoction called involtini - delicious!
ReplyDeleteLately I've been putting feta on evvverrything. It's magic.
ReplyDeleteNow that is my kind of salad. I'll have to try to find this feta now.
ReplyDeleteYUM!!!
ReplyDeleteyes, there's nothing better than fresh feta. and nothing worse when you want the good stuff and it turns out to be old and overpowering. and that salad looks perfect.
ReplyDeleteYES! It's the only kind I'll eat if I can't get to a Greek joint for the real deal. The Bulgarian stuff is vile.
ReplyDeleteOh my, that's not too far from where I live. I'll have to try it!!
ReplyDeletelooks delicious!
ReplyDeleteYes, please. Heck, I don't even need the bread/naan. Though, I know it wouldn't hurt.
ReplyDeleteWow...this looks simple and delicious.
ReplyDeleteooh simple but oh so yummy!
ReplyDeleteYum times a million.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize there were different varieties of feta! Thanks for the info!

ReplyDeleteI'm a (relatively new) follower of your blog and laughed out loud reading this post. My boyfriend is from Bulgaria and we constantly bicker over feta cheese. We reside just outside of NYC, where I always buy Greek, and he, being Bulgarian, swears by that from his homeland. (personally, i find it way too bitter). Anyway, I showed him this post and said "ha! bloggers know best!"
ReplyDeletewe eat this salad a lot -- well, actually, i eat it all the time for lunch. it is so yummy!
ReplyDeleteIn Australia the creamy feta is Dutch, and we have Greek, but I've never seen French or Bulgarian. I love the dutch!
ReplyDeleteI ate this tonight, complete with the warm naan. And a nice beer. It was a good dinner!
