End of the shopping hiatus - thoughts

I've now completed 12 full weeks of the shopping hiatus inspired by Joslyn. It was such a good exercise, and I'm really glad I participated. This post is a little wordy, so settle in and relax. Or drift away and come back tomorrow for something more exciting. I promise I won't be offended.

Reflections: I learned a lot about how I shop (impulsively). I am by no means a crazy shopper, but I am easily swayed by a good sale. When I cleaned out my closet during the first week, I realized that I tend to buy things on sale that aren't quite right in terms of fit, color, or purpose. I also tend to stock up when things are on sale (if one sweater is good, three are better!) which is only sometimes justified.

Cheats: Pretty minimal. The boots, which are utterly fabulous in person and I haven't had an ounce of regret since purchasing them. The tea cup, which I still maintain is not a real cheat because it was vintage. A few yards of new fabric, which is a cheat and which I haven't shared with you quite yet, but I will, I promise.

Non cheating, but still shopping: Some thrift store/Craigslist purchases including sheets (for sewing projects), picture frames (for crafting) and wine crates (for planters). Some supplies including three cans of spray paint, one sheet of metal, two sheets of wood, two packages of brass hooks, some needles and thread, some bias tape. Hair product.

Moving forward: I'd like to target my impulsivity to cut down on my silly spending. Shop mindfully is my new mantra. This means viewing my money as a resource that I want to use and spread wisely. I'd like to increase my Etsy/independent designer shopping and decrease (not cut out altogether) my Forever 21 binges. I'm also working on keeping a list that categorizes things I notice and want, rather than buying them immediately. The idea is to look for patterns in my desires and then find options that work for me, rather than buying random pieces whenever they catch my eye.

My current list includes layering tanks, good cardigans, good jeans, good flats/sandals, super soft tees, and anything with stripes, ruffles, or in gray and ivory.

Specific strategies:
1. Keep a list of things that catch my eye. This serves two purposes, because writing it down helps with not actually buying, and it also lets me analyze my cravings.
2. Avoid stores when possible.
3. Look for alternative options on Etsy and in independent stores.

I will still stock up on sales when it's worth it (once every couple years I need to invest in sweaters and cardigans, because I wear them every single day), but I'll try not to let myself get too caught up in the frenzy.

Things to ask myself:
1. Do I love it?
2. Can I use it/think of a place to wear it (imaginary balls or cocktail parties don't count)/find a place to put it?
3. Do I feel good about buying it? I've found that buying things where I have a personal connection with the artist makes me feel happiest.

The best part was that, even knowing my twelve weeks were up, I felt no compulsion to go buy anything this weekend. I think that the urge to go shopping decreases significantly if you cut yourself off for a bit. It's like I've rewired my brain! I've also realized that researching what you want to buy is almost as much fun as actually purchasing it. And when you eventually do purchase something that you've fully researched, you feel much happier about it.

If you missed out and want to see my progression through the hiatus you can see weeks one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven right here.

Weekend + no shopping update - week 11

I'm in the home stretch here and things seem to be going smoothly. I did a little bit of almost shopping last week (you know, the kind where you online shop and put things in your cart and then close the browser without checking out), but I managed to hold strong. Next week I'll have a little wrap up of the shopping hiatus and explain where I plan to go from here.

I can definitely say that one of the benefits of not shopping is the extra time it gives you. We had a lot going on this weekend, but I'm not sure any of it will be ready to share with you this week. Hopefully soon.

Weekend + no shopping update - week 10

Can you believe it's week 10 already? Two more weeks to go.

I cruised through last week and then temptation snuck up on me, during a quick trip to the bike shop. $500 worth of temptation (but on sale from $600!).
{Simple City 3 W image from Fisher website}

I wish this picture did the bike justice, but it doesn't come close. The bike is glossy, of course. But it has the sweetest retro leather saddle (by Bontrager!) and leather covered handles. The lines are beautiful and in person it is very, very hard to resist running your hands over it covetously (luckily people in bike shops are used to this sort of behavior, and no one thinks you are crazy).

I didn't cave, but it was shockingly tempting. I have the sweetest yellow 1972 Schwinn and I am still too terrified to take it out in LA. So I definitely neither need nor deserve something this deluxe. But still.

So I guess that's just me. I resisted a $60 dress last week and then almost impulse purchased a $500 bike. Baby steps.

No shopping update - week 9

If you are trying to avoid buying anything do not drink two margaritas with your girlfriends and then aimlessly wander into...1. Urban Outfitters
2. Anthropologie
3. Gap *

And then definitely don't go onto their websites to find pictures to post on your blog or you run the risk of finding even more things that you want, like...

4. Gap (online only)

Just saying.

(No, I didn't buy anything - but it hurt a little).

*I only went into Gap because I had to go to the bathroom, and they are the only ones who have a bathroom and I didn't even expect to see anything good because I've found them moderately disappointing over the last few years and they've pretty much fallen off my list. Until now.

WINNER!!!! + no shopping update (week 8)

The winner of the lovely Jess LC necklace from last week's giveaway is.....

Commenter number 53 - Elizabeth Bufton! Elizabeth, you'll be contacted by Jess directly.

See the rest of the winners over at Jess's blog. And as a little added solace to those who didn't win, Jess is offering US shipping for everything on her site today and tomorrow. No code needed - just head over to the JessLC website and the free shipping will be applied when you check out.

At 8 weeks, I'm officially 2/3 of the way through my shopping hiatus and I think I've hit my stride. I even set foot in a boutique last week and managed to not feel a serious tug of temptation. Well, maybe there was some temptation (super soft long sleeve striped shirts were involved), but there was no conflict. I'm definitely feeling like I can make it through the next month.

This week, I have a little bit of cooking (finally!), possibly some crafting, and maybe I'll even torture you with yet another cupcake recipe, if you don't think it will be too much to handle two weeks in a row.

No shopping update (week 7) + blog love

I had some weak moments last week, but I pulled through. For some reason I was craving craft supplies. Odd, right? I wanted bright, beautiful, expensive paper, fancy hole punches and rolls and rolls of delicious ribbon (I will blame that on Kate, because she posted about The Ribbon Jar and now I'm addicted). I held off because I don't need any of these things and it makes sense to wait until I have a specific project in mind. Maybe it's a seven week itch?

I did get very lucky and receive some beauty in the mail. The ever so sweet Patricia of PVE Design sent me a little package in the mail, containing several of her beautifully illustrated cards and a special surprise made just for me.

A teeny tiny book with perfect illustrations of some of my favorite photographs!

You can't believe how talented Patricia is. Seeing her drawings in person is such a treat - there is a special personality that shines through all of them. I've been showing off my little book to everyone. Drawing is a talent that I seriously envy, so I'll have to live vicariously through her.

Isn't this little blogging community wonderful?

Weekend + no shopping update (week 6)

I'm happy to say that resisting temptation was pretty easy last week. I am still not going into stores, because I can't completely trust myself with a sale rack, but I've managed to avoid online buying despite browsing. I don't even have any huge shopping dilemmas to share with you. You would think it gets harder as you go along, but it's actually easier than it was the first couple of weeks.

The weekend was lovely - overcast with just a bit of sun, not too warm, but nice enough to sit outside for a couple hours over coffee and do some serious people watching. The orange trees are in bloom, which makes the air smell heavenly.

The poor apricot tree keeps getting fooled by our brief warm spells and thinks it's time for spring.

And the camillas are back in full force.

I also did a bit of baking - I'll share later this week.

No shopping update (week 5)

I powered through this last week without any major temptations to buy. Of course, I did receive some little gifts, and that was nice.

I'll admit that I purchased one thing, but luckily it was thrifted and thus doesn't break my shopping hiatus according to the rules I made up in the beginning. And, it was irresistible. P, you are completely to blame for this, but I kind of love you for it.

Pictures are from Thorwald Home

Seriously, how cool is it? It's a fortune telling vintage tea cup from the 1930s. I can't wait till it comes to live with me, at which point you will probably all grow sick and tired of seeing it photographed again and again. Check out the rest of Genevieve's blog and her new Etsy shop, Thorwald Home, to see her other amazing finds.

Weekend + no shopping update (week 4)

My dears, I have a confession to make. I'm sure you know what's coming. My research last week turned into something a little more serious and I purchased the boots. I have plenty of justifications for myself (I've been wanting a pair just like this since fall, I will wear them for years to come, they are leather, they are made in Spain, the brand name means "poppy flower" in French, they went on sale and the sizes are disappearing at an alarming rate, round toed shoes are my fave and they might go out of style soon and I don't want pointy toed boots because they make my feet hurt) but I will just admit it gracefully and move on.

It was a thoughtful purchase and I am at peace with it, despite the exorbitant price tag. Read: I am squealing with delight inside and hoping against hope that they fit and I don't have to return them because I am madly in love with them already.

If you are trying not to buy anything, then please don't visit the Coclico website. It might actually kill you. Don't believe me? Check out these.

Oh, and the weekend was lovely.

Coming up this week - all Valentine's, all the time. I loooove Valentine's Day, but I realize some of you are skeptical. Just play along with me. I promise that there will be no soft focus shots of roses, no Hallmark poetry, and hopefully nothing else that triggers your gag reflex.

Boots, deconstructed

Three weeks of no shopping and one major closet overhaul, and I have spent some serious time thinking about what my next purchases will be. I'm actually thinking in terms of investments, if that isn't too lofty a word to use. And I have come to some conclusions. Namely, buy very nice things, sparingly, after you've spent lots of time thinking about it.

I also now call my online shopping research, because it sounds much more investment-like. I've decided that my first major purchase will be a pair of leather boots. Ones that I will be able to wear for several years, with pants or skirts, which means they need to be pretty classic.

boot-shopping

Free People Clermont boot ($548)
Frye Fiona Tall boot ($348)
Frye Adrienne Button boot ($398)
Coclico Obama boot (prices vary widely between stores, around $400 for this color)

The boot in the left corner is my inspiration boot and I've realized that I gravitate towards boots that have the same qualities. But at $548, I'm worried that it's a little exorbitant, even for an investment. I mean, it's not as if Free People are known for their high quality boots (are they?). If you can get a pair of Frye's for under $400, I'm a bit reluctant to shell out that much. So I have two pairs of Frye boots here (although I think number 2 might not be classic enough, as adorable as I think they are) plus one pair of Coclico's that are almost identical the to Free People boots but cost a bit less.

Here's the thing, the research is fun. And I think I'll be less likely to experience buyer's remorse, because I'll know that this was a carefully thought out decision. I'm not saying I'll give up my sudden shopping sprees, but I think I will be limiting them significantly once this experiment is over. The only issue I'm running into is wondering if these options will still be around in three months when my hiatus is over.

Boot opinions, people?

Weekend + no shopping update (three weeks)

sewing

The weekend involved a little bit of everything. Lucha Va Voom, which was amazing. Baking (recipe coming up later this week). Sewing, some successful, some not so successful. Oh, and lots of delicious sleeping.

I have to admit that last week was a bit difficult on the no shopping front. I felt like the retail world was out to get me. Did you see the Toast sale? Or the Rose and Radish sale? And I didn't even click over to the J. Crew sale, or the twelve million Bluefly sales they kept emailing me about. Here was my imaginary shopping cart at Toast. Note how restrained I was - only three items!

Scarf, shoes, and bag

The bag is a pretty serious temptation, but I have to say that not shopping makes things easier in general. I feel tempted but not conflicted and I don't waste time agonizing over whether or not to buy something. It's very freeing, in a way.

How are my fellow non-shoppers holding up? And did anyone who is shopping indulge in some sales last week? Let me live vicariously through you.

Weekend + no shopping update (two weeks)

We had a perfect weekend - one rainy day and one sunny day, coffee and croissants at the farmer's market, a bit of cooking, some tentative starts at crafting.

It's officially week two of the shopping hiatus and I'm doing fine. Not to say there hasn't been quite a bit of temptation. I guess I was feeling neutrals last week, based on a look at some of the items I have bookmarked.

1. Clermont boots by Free People.
2. White textured serving bowl from Horne.
3. Smocked silk necklace from Etsy seller tinctory.
4. Lovely winter blankets by Area.
5. Oversized cream bag from Etsy seller moop.
6. Ivory cowl from Phydeaux designs.

A week (and a half) of no spending

This no spending thing of Joslyn's is working for me (note that the cake stands featured last week were all purchased before the start of the hiatus). I've found that the most effective strategy is immediately deleting all emails I receive about amazing sales, and resolutely not clicking over when other people post about such sales. Also, not going into stores.

I've found that not shopping frees up time. Monday, all aglow with the imminent prospect of change, I decided to take action in my closet. (It really does feel like the start of an era, doesn't it?)

Okay, I realize the pictures are too small and it doesn't look like the dramatic difference it really is. Will it help if I show you the pile of stuff I have to drop off at Goodwill?

DSC_1728

Yep, I had to tie up my clothes in an old curtain, hobo style. Because I don't have giant boxes or bags. (The Christmas tree stand, the sifter and the board game did not come out of my closet.)

I also have a stack of clothes requiring care (hemming, replacing buttons and general alterations) that should keep me busy.

And I realized that a lot of the things I was throwing out were things I probably shouldn't have bought in the first place. Cheap fabrics, poor fit, almost okay but not quite. I am definitely going to be revamping my shopping habits once I'm allowed to spend money again.

It also pained me to admit that I will never again be as rail thin as I was in college (huge amounts of work/stress and darting all over campus do wonders for your figure), but I am finally letting go.

Me: (holding up a pair of tight black pants) I love these so much, I hate to get rid of them.
D: They're hot, but I don't think I've seen you in them for at least 5 years.
Me: That's because I haven't been able to fit into them in 5 years.
*collective silence while we contemplate this fact*
Me: I'm getting rid of them.
