Shopping hiatus, week eight

Week eight went by fairly easily, except that I woke up one morning with a neck that felt entirely twisted out of joint. I've had a new pillow on my list for a while, and I think I'm going to go ahead and break the hiatus this week to invest in a better quality one. D swears by his funny shaped memory foam pillow, but I think I need something different and more downy.  Anyone have anything they love?

I've decided to keep a little running tally of my post-hiatus shopping list for the remainder of the hiatus. I'll update it each week, crossing things off if I decide I can live without them, adding things as the urge strikes.

Things I want to buy:
*Sunglasses (2 pairs - from Zenni)
*Pillow (will probably buy this week)
*New sheets for summer
*Perfect workout tee shirts (must be thin cotton, loosely fitted, nice and long, v-neck)
*New TOMS in spring/summer color
*Serving pieces from the Heath summer collection (specifically, the summer appetizer set and possibly the serving and cutting board set)
*Small rug for the my office (currently looking on Craigslist)

  1. I know several people who are in love with the funky foam pillows. Maybe you can try using D's for a night or two to see how it "fits". Good luck and I think that counts as necessity.

  2. My favorite work-out tees are mens' undershirts, like the Hanes 6-pack you can buy at any Target. The smallest size is usually just loose enough, they do come in v-neck styles, and they're 100% cotton so they're pretty lightweight.

  3. There is a pillow from Ikea made for side sleepers that I absolutely love. We originally bought it for my husband, but it's so great that every time he wakes up before me I take it to sleep on. Unfortunately, we don't live close enough to an Ikea for me to run out and get another.

  4. I have to agree w/D I haven't slept better or had less neck issues since using the funny shaped memory foam pillow! Beth

  5. i bought a "side sleeper" foam pillow from Ikea too. it looks kinda chintzy compared to my gigantic feather pillows that i was using, but my neck pain is gone and so is my snoring.

i can't believe i just admitted to that!!!

  7. my boyfriend bought the funny shaped memory foam pillow and then stopped using it, so i should give it a try. but, we recently bought a new mattress and got these awesome, high-quality latex pillows, and they're the best pillows i've ever had. you don't sink down, but they're still very fluffy with a lot of give.

  8. There is a good compromise between the memory foam (tempurpedic etc) and a more downy pillow. It's called the oxygen pillow, European Sleepworks sells them. It's sort of like memory foam, but lighter and springy. I really love it, as I'm torn between a traditional down pillow and a tempurpedic. You might like it too.

  9. i don't have a good pillow, which is why i find myself in a similar (and painful) situation as you. please share what you end up buying!

  10. Pillows are so important and hard to find. I agree, once you find your dream pillow, please let me know! I do know you can get very nice pillows at Home Goods (if you have one by you)for very a low price.

  11. I have to also agree with memory foam... I got one from my chiropractor dad a few years ago and have been pain-free ever since. It does take some getting used to though, trading in your fluffy pillow for a brick, so don't give up if you don't love it instantly. Give it some time. Good luck!

  12. I say go for the pillow, Toms, and sunglasses. All things that will really get you ready for summer. :) After the hiatus, that is.

  13. i thought i slept just fine, but my mom told me to try out her chiroflow pillow (its filled with water) and i slept so peacefully that i haven't given it back yet (it was her spare so don't think i am too mean)! i honestly feel more rested in the morning and don't wake up at all during the night or have a stiff neck or shoulder in the morning. ever. its amazing.

  16. I do the hanes/fruit of the loom t'shirts too. I get the v-neck in a size small (except when pregnant, lol).

  17. My favorite workout tshirts are from urban outfitters, bdg sheer v-necks. They're super comfy and thin

  18. I'm a memory foam pillow convert, thanks the huz. It takes a few nights to get used to but I am OBSESSED with it. I absolutely love it. Otherwise L.L. Bean has excellent quality down pillows for half the price of most places. They'll last a lifetime. Highly highly recommend them.

  19. i dunno about memory foam. we have one but i prefer to sleep with a big puffy pillow. i made an exception in my shopping rules this weekend to buy new running shorts - normally i try to find vintage/used clothing options before buying new, but this will be so worth it. going to target for the purchase gave me major stressballs though.

  21. After seeing Davide Wolfe and then doing some research, I've started sleeping without a pillow, I love it, and before that I was using one of those shaped ones from the chiro, works good too. Check out this article on instinctive sleeping in the British Medical Journal http://www.bmj.com/cgi/pdf_extract/321/7276/1616

  22. My husband loves his funny shaped memory foam, too, but I can't use one because I'm a stomach sleeper and they just don't work. I got a super cozy down filled one at Costco that was kind of pricey for a pillow but is the best ever.

  23. I got a great one from Costco that's kind of half-memory-foam style. Wish I could remember the brand! But it's nice because it holds its shape for you, but is more malleable. And Gap has great v-necks! I love them for around the house, as long as you can get them on sale. :)

  24. I love your to-buy list! As for pillows, I invested in Hutterite down pillows and duvet when I got my bed and sleep, when it comes, is definitely a little sweeter!

  25. I nth the weird-shaped memory foam pillow. I have lower back issues & this has really helped.
Target has the perfect tees for me - workout, lounging, layering, cheap - maybe 2 mos ago, they had nice long V-necks that may meet your criteria. I picked up at least 5 in neutral colors. $5 a pop too!
Thanks for continuing to inspire. We splurged on meals all weekend with friends & each other. But no impulsive, just-to-fill-time TJMaxx buys!

  26. I bought this synthetic down pillow that is hypo allergenic (which is nice because I do have guests that are allergic to down). I got it at linens and things in Canada before it closed but I'm sure any bed and bath section would have them. I like it way more than my old down ones because I can't really sleep at night on something that caused animals suffering plus those pesky little feathers don't poke though the pillow case at the corners anymore which means less vacuuming for me and no more of them poking me in the face.

  27. we currently use the down-like cotton RL pillows from macy's. i love it, but then again, i usually find that when i wake up, my head has slipped down so it's more on mattress than on pillow.

ps. i went to jcrew outlet today & they have the perfect thin white v-neck tees on super sale! if not, there's always walmart.

  28. I had upper back/neck problems for awhile and realized it was because I kept buying cushy pillows, when what a really needed was one that cradled my neck.

I found one at BB&B that I liked but I was not a fan of the $130 price tag.

Shortly after, during a 3 hour trip to Ikea, I stumbled upon this beauty:

    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10131604

The IKEA 365+ FAST side/back sleeper pillow.

It has done WONDERS and I rarely wake up with neck pain anymore. Check out the description of the pillow for more info. Easy on the bank account, too!

    Hope it helps! :)
