Shopping hiatus, week three

We had a couple bumps this last week, but we pulled through.

Some could be justifiable. Dustin is in desperate need of a new wet suit, so an exception will probably be granted in that case. When you surf three mornings a week, a worn out wet suit is a serious inconvenience.

Sadly, no such exception could be granted to my main temptation this week - new yellow TOMS in spring-y linen.
I've found that during the first few weeks of the shopping hiatus, it's best to go cold turkey on the usual sources of temptation. Avoid stores, recycle catalogs immediately, and never, ever open a sale email. After you get over the shopping habit, I find that I can go back to looking at pictures for inspiration, without feeling the immediate need to purchase something.

Unfortunately, TOMS are sold in my local Whole Foods, so I have to face down a whole wall of them every time I need to pick up a carton of milk. I tell myself it's a good exercise in self restraint.

  1. I just bought Toms too! I never had any interest before, but they are SO comfortable and practical, something my shoes are usually not! I got black, but I'm loving the spring yellow.

  2. I've been dying to try these shoes. I'm getting to the age where comfort trumps all else.

  4. i find that buying yourself a pair of Tom's doesn't exactly end your shopping hiatus since it does guarantee a new pair to a child!

  6. Oh, what a lovely yellow! I've been cutting back quite a lot on purchases lately (mostly just in an effort to save money), but then Gilt went had Superga sneakers for $32 and, since I've been needing something like that, well, I couldn't resist.

I think Cupcakes & Cashmere is right though: at least your purchase has a positive social aspect to it!

  7. Oh, how could you resist? I wonder if my Whole Foods carries them...

  8. But on the upside: You just gave a pair of shoes to a child in need. I think that evens it out!

  9. i second the surfing-three-days-a-week admiration. have you had any success upcycling bits of dustin's old suits? i love that material, and repurposing it would tie in nicely with the hiatus.

  10. ooh, Toms nailed that spring yellow color.
And something about being at Whole Foods makes me want to buy clothing I would never normally wear ... they have marketed to me and it works. And I hate and love them for it.

  11. way to go with your shopping hiatus. i know it's a cop out, but i have too many things to buy before my wedding, so i'm deferring the hiatus for a few months. are toms comfy? my feet hurt in all shoes.

  15. what wonderful restraint....i am also on "the" spending hiatus and today i feel weak so i will stay away from the shops and toms website!!

  16. You guys are so right - I do feel better about purchasing TOMS because of the charity aspect. However, I still have to resist during the spending hiatus, because they aren't a necessity.

@lauren - Hadn't even considered upcycling the wetsuit! I'll have to check it out. It might not work too well because when wetsuit material gets old it loses elasticity and actually shrinks and gets tough. Which is why surfing in an old wetsuit is a total no-go, because it feels like you're being strangled.

@giovanna - TOMS are so comfy! It's what won me over initially.

  17. It's more helpful to be on a shopping hiatus when you have to money. Example= Me. Good luck resisting!

  18. but look at it this way. It's not so much a shoe purchase, as a charitable gift!
