What to pack for Hawaii

I have a bizarre obsession with packing light. I get giddily excited when I go on a trip and I have less luggage than anyone else. It definitely backfires sometimes (exhibit A would be me in Costa Rica on a college ecology trip, washing my clothes in various rivers and shivering because I didn't pack enough layers, but still slightly triumphant because I had the smallest bag of my group).

Luckily, Hawaii requires little in the way of packing (and I avoided the $15 checked bag fee).

Packing list (6 day trip)

4 casual cotton sundresses + 1 pool cover up
1 nice dress for fancy dinners
1 cream colored pashmina (goes with everything)
2 bathing suits
1 pair shorts (for hiking) + 1 pair capri yoga pants
3 tank tops
1 sports bra + 2 regular bras (nude + black)
12 pairs of underwear (there are some things you just don't want to run out of, especially when you are getting in and out of the pool and hiking, which means showering a couple times a day)
2 pairs sandals (my Rainbows for poolside + my new ruffly sandals for dress up)
1 pair running shoes

Plane outfit - trouser cut dark wash jeans + a tank top + a thin striped cardigan from J. Crew. Long beaded necklace that can be worn either as intended or as a pretty headband. Thin gold bangle. Ruffly white sandals.

The list looks quite long, but it's all very compact. Everything fit into a small gym bag, well under the size limit for carry on luggage, and I had a canvas tote to hold my books, wallet and toiletries.

  2. Hahah, I am *totally* with you on packing light -- that bizarre feeling of accomplishment (and winning? even though there's no packing contest :D?) -- like my husband + I were able to pack in one bag together, and the guys in our group were all, "BOTH of you guys packed in that one bag? Our girlfriends *each* have a bag that size!" I know. Sick, huh? But congrats to you :) -- now I know where to go for what to pack in Hawaii!!

  3. Congrats to you! Your list seems reasonable for your Hawaii vacay. I'm faced with a dilemma as I need to pack up my stuff into one duffle for 2.5 months in Europe. I've narrowed down my shoes from 17 to 10 but I'm afraid I need to cut the number down a bit more. Yikes! I wrote a post earlier this week about packing it all into a hat box. Imagine that!

  4. i seriously love this post. i went to live in france in college and brought only two sweaters to last me the whole winter. i may have sometimes been cold, but i definitely had the smallest pack--victory!

  5. i'd go as far to say that i'm the complete opposite! i love squeezing in as much as my closet into a compact suitcase as possible so i never feel like i'm short on clothes. if i had such an organized list as yours though, i might consider changing that sentiment.

  6. I am a chronic over-packer. This is a great post for me to read. How many days was this for?

  7. Nice! I, too, love packing light and always make myself remove one item right before everything goes into the suitcase. I know what I'll really want to wear and what's wishful thinking, so I try always to pack the things I gravitate toward.

Great list, Rachel. I'll likely refer to it when I go to Hawaii ... maybe I should start looking for tickets.

...and i understand the wonderful feeling.

  9. Wow, thanks for this! I've been wondering how I am going to be able to pack for two weeks into one big backpack for my upcoming vacation. I've never backpacked before and tend to always bring too much. I'm going to have to come back to this post in August for help!

  10. Good for you! On a 2 week trip to Ireland a couple years back I was very smug about having the smallest luggage. I find rolling clothes instead of folding leaves a lot more space!

  11. you are my packing hero - I always always over pack.

  12. that is a very impressive feat as i tend to overpack by about 4 days worth of clothes. i always joke "i like to have choices," but you've inspired me. for my next trip in a week, i will take the "travel light" challenge.

  14. Awesome list! I love packing light!

  15. See, I would have packed at least 10 tank tops. I have a weird thing with tank tops. They must ALL come with me where ever I go.

I wish I was a light packer. Perhaps I will test out your style next weekend for Nantucket.

  18. Hi there, I just started reading. Your blog is just lovely.

I will bookmark this entry because I am always going places, but I am usually stumped when it comes to efficient packing. When I get to the destination, I either pack too much or wish I had packed something else!

  19. Wow, you're a much better packer than me. I am the worst. I always overpack. Always! It takes me an entire evening to figure out each outfit + shoes + accessories. Meanwhile, my boyfriend spends ten minutes throwing underwear and his contact solution into his backpack and he's ready to go. But who has the Motrin when he needs it, huh? Me!

Also, I got my package in the mail yesterday. Yea! Thank you so much. I love the headband...I had printed out your instructions, but now I don't have to make one for myself. Also, the cards and the magnetic list were awesome. Much appreciated! Stay tuned for my "Pay It Forward" post on my blog.

  21. I'm terrible at packing light. But this is wonderful. I want to be able to do that!

Have a great time in Hawaii!

  22. I am right there with you. I love to have the smallest bag and I hate returning home and realizing I packed things that never left the suitcase. Shoes are always the hardest.

I love your ruffly sandles and the deep blue dress. very nice!

  23. Totally with you on the packing light - I feel energized when I'm carrying less (and maybe a little smug, too).

  24. I'm very impressed! I know exactly what you mean about the strange satisfaction of having the smallest bag. Before they banned liquids my dad used to only let us pack carry on luggage.

  25. Alright, I have been reading your blog for a long time and am finally writing you a little something something to let you know. I just got a blogspot, was previously at livejournal, so now I can comment and you will know who I am. And I also wanted to tell you that I gave a link to your blog because I am going to be doing a post like this, inspired from yours, over the next couple days since I am going on 2 different trips in the next couple days. =D
Either way, I love your blog.
    And loved your packing/fashion sense.

PS: Bravo on packing light, I have not mastered that just yet; sometimes I fear I never will.

  28. Don't forget to pack a light rain jacket or umbrella! (It's been a little windy/rainy here the past few days.)

  29. heh. carabella, there is *too* a contest, and we win. :D

/mmm...perhaps there's a twelve-step support group? I once managed a (largish) carry-on sized bag for a weeklong alaska cruise. it required obsessive planning the entire week prior, but *damned* if I didn't know exactly what to wear every day!

  30. LOVE those sandals! I'm the same way--we went to hawaii for two weeks and all our clothes fit into one carry on each!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm slightly evil about that. I did a 14 day Europe trip with a backpack the size of a Jansport. Makes walking around and jumping off of trains a lot easier! I always gloat when I have the smallest bag around (plus they never lose my luggage).

  32. Awesome-ist! I'm Hawaii right now, too! Kauai, to be exact.

  33. Where did you get those sandals!?!?! ADORABLE!!!

  34. Great tips. Am off to Hawaii in 13 sleeps from Sydney Australia. Am going to follow your tips!

    Thanks.

  35. May be because it's part of my job, but I am soo into packing and moving light I can't even begin to explain! The tips are great and this is a must read for every wanna-be light packer! :)

  36. Fantastic list! I am going to visit Hawaii next week. I will be with my mom. We will use your list. Thank you so much for sharing it. Greetings!
