The weekend, briefly

The weather was so gorgeous this weekend that walking was really the only thing to do. And we walked - about seven miles over both days, although we offset it by making frequent stops to eat delicious food. We specifically picked our neighborhood because it is so walkable and it's lovely when we actually have time to take advantage of it.

We hadn't been to Beard Papa's for cream puffs in a while, so it was nice to stop in. Although I don't know if we'll be going back soon, because the next day we tried the new churro place and I'm smitten. They serve traditional churros for dipping into thick hot chocolate. They're a little skinnier than the ones we were used to in Spain, but such a great snack. And the cafe con leche was excellent. We pretended we were on vacation.

  1. I LOVE that you pretended you were on vacation while enjoying a decadent snack - that's one of my favorite ways to unwind too. And brava on all the walking - I moved to NYC specifically so I'd never have to drive again, but I find it so refreshing that you two are so good at using public transportation, and walking, in a city like LA.

  7. The thing I miss the most about living in CA is the 'walkability' of it.

I'm happy to have discovered your blog as well (and another southern CA blogger!) :)

  12. I would have appreciated our beautiful weather a bit more if I wasn't serving smoking hot, homemade pasta with braised chicken and sauce to 40 guests. We were melting! :)

I love the look of those churros. I was just talking to my parents the other day while they snacked on El Torito churros (don't ask, they have a thing for franchised Mexican food) and my mom was describing how different churros are in Argentina. Notwithstanding the fact that she was eating FAST FOOD CHURROS (how could they not be different?!) I was intrigued. I found a recipe for them in my Doña Petrona book. This might be just the inspiration I need to try it out.

  14. @ Jessica - NYC is definitely way ahead of us on walking, but I think people underestimate how much they can walk in LA if they make the effort. I wish people would do it more! We share a car, and it's totally doable with a bit of careful planning (where to live and work) and a willingness to take public transit.

@ Char - I've seen the pictures up on the blogs - there's some lovely stuff in there! I think it's probably all a little more complicated than what I'll want for my wedding dress, but who knows if my mind will change once I actually go hunting?

@ Jules - I can definitely see why the heat would not have been so welcome in your situation! We're also very close to the beach, so we probably didn't get quite as much honest to goodness warmth.

I still have a weird thing for franchised mexican food, so no objection here. I think of it as a different cuisine entirely, and enjoy it that way. I would be so impressed if you made churros! I'm still scared of frying anything.
