I'm over at Meg's place today, talking about making the decision to get married. It's a post that I've wanted to write for a while, but it didn't really seem like it fit over here, so I was thrilled when Meg asked if I could do it for APW. Head over and check it out if you'd like.
And yes, I've been reading wedding blogs for years. I actually discovered blogs when my sister got married and I was looking for an alternative to wedding magazines. Then I just never stopped. I mostly only read the personal ones because it's the experiences I love hearing about.
EDIT:
P.S. Thank you for all your sweet comments about the post and for the discussion over on the post itself! You guys are amazing, as is the APW community and it's a pleasure to be surrounded by such smart, thoughtful people. And also, may I just say that I'm amazed you are all too nice to call me out for publicly admitting that I watched Friends? That was going to get deleted in the edits, but I left it in for historical accuracy.

i found your blog via practical wedding today and love your blog...thanks for sharing your personal thoughts about how your opinion of marriage for you changed. and congrats!
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written, Rachel! And so, so sweet. I am beyond happy for you and Dustin!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for a long time and never commented until now. That was so well written and honest. The best thing I've read in a long time! Best of luck!
ReplyDeletepreach it, sister.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story and how wonderful to know yourself well enough to proceed with your life and relationship in a way that makes you a stronger, better person. I love it.
ReplyDeletegreat read but the page load there takes soooo long.
ReplyDeleteI've just read this, what a wonderful, insightful story! xxxxxxxxx
ReplyDeleteJust read it. Simply beautiful. Thank you for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't even read it yet. But, I suspect it'll be awesome :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this, excellent guest post!
ReplyDeleteWonderful story! Love it! Can't wait for wedding planning details!
ReplyDeleteLoved your story. It actually hit home in quite a few places. Mostly the being together for a long time, but not being ready to get married and needing independence. It was always like oh we'll get married once we're in college, then we'll get married once we graduate but no hurry, now its pretty much we'll get married once we are done with grad school and have real jobs. The difference is those first ones were just excuses to wait, but the last one feels like I am actually ready to get married once that happens (which will probably only be a year or two). I just feel comfortable about it now, when I never really did before. Thank goodness I have a guy that is on board with all those changes!
ReplyDeleteThank you again for writing this. So helpful, so thoughtful, so YES.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog via APW too but realised I'd actually been on it before! I've now spent over an hour reading it and might start my own one!
ReplyDeleteLoved your post on A Practical Wedding. Marriage is so personal--but sometimes it's easy for people to forget that. Thanks also for introducing me to A Practical Wedding/Reclaiming Wife. I still am getting used to being called a "wife." Such a strange word.
ReplyDeleteSo well written, Rachel. And, for the record, I would have loved to read that here. I think it would have fit in perfectly. Then again, I am a sucker for a love story. To have known Dustin since you were 12 is incredibly sweet. If you're ever up for it, I would love to hear that story, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome post. I can totally relate - not in the sense that I'm thinking about marriage, though. It's more about knowing yourself in and out of a relationship. I struggled with this a lot in my first serious relationship, but I learned SO much as a result of it. Your story totally resonates with me!
ReplyDeletei made a comment at your post, but just wanted to say here that i enjoyed reading your thoughts about reaching the decision to marry. you wrote in a way people could relate to and also learn from.
ReplyDeletethanks, wishing you all the best, katie
that was truly lovely.
ReplyDeleterachel, our experiences seem very similar, though me and mine have _only_ been together 6 years. ::wink:: some days you just wake up and the whole world is different!
ReplyDeleteon friends-related guilt:
let he among us who is without sin ...
I just read it and it was such a sweet and beautiful story. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteRe: EDIT
ReplyDelete"Friends" is awesome...no shame! Whenever I think of Joey pulling out his fork to eat cheesecake from the floor...well, I just get happy. :)
