Re-reading, rather.
I've already read Housekeeping, but I couldn't resist checking it out again when I was at the library last week. I read it slowly, because it is one of those books you want to get lost in. Quiet, sharp, witty and with an overarching aching feeling that hits you just slightly below the ribs. The words are beautifully crafted but never contrived.
Also, you might want to clean your house and cozy up in crisp sheets before you read the first couple chapters. There are some descriptions of domesticity in there that will have you feeling the urge to sun bleach all your linens, whether you have proper linens or not.

have you read her book "Gilead"? It is the most beautifully written book I've read (though i haven't read Housekeeping--i'll have to check it out).
ReplyDeletei haven't read this yet... but if you've read it twice, i'll have to try it!
ReplyDeleteOh, this looks PERFECT. I've been needing a new book, and this one looks like just the ticket.
ReplyDeleteoh, this is my absolute favorite book! i went to a talk she gave about religion and ethics, and all i could do when i met her afterwards was gush about how much i loved housekeeping. i think she thought i was a nutter!
ReplyDeleteI will add it to my reading list, thank you? Are you on GoodReads.com? I'd love to have you as a reading buddy.
ReplyDeletesounds like one that is a good dive into - lately i've been skimming and need a good plunge into the deep end.
ReplyDeletethanks for the suggestion, it sounds lovely!
ReplyDeletei have had this on my "to read" list for several years. thanks for the encouragement to go ahead. i love how you describe it as "beautifully crafted but never contrived."
ReplyDeletekatie
I haven't read this! Now it sounds like I need to go check it out!
ReplyDeleteI love rereading favorite books, I'm extremely guilty of that. Your description of this book makes me want to read it, and wash my sheets, not necessarily in that order.
ReplyDeleteWoah, I've been thinking about this book lately... it was an assigned book in 12th grade (really liked it, but I was young), and I've been considering giving it another go now that I'm actually keeping a house. I'll take this as a sign for 'yes.'
ReplyDeleteI've put this on my to-read list. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletea friend recommend I check out your blog. weird, right? because I could swear we were friends in a former life, only, you were much cooler and I was wearing homemade jumpers until I was 15, but i think there was a connection :).
ReplyDeleteHousekeeping is one of my favorites. Few things match the beauty of Ms. Robinson's prose,
"We would make a circle, and never reach a shore at all, if there were a vortex, I thought, and we would be drawn down into the darker world, where other sounds would pour into our ears until we seemed to find songs in them, and the sight of water would invade our eyes, and the taste of water would invade our bowels and unstring our bones, and we would know the seasons and customs of the place as if there were no others."
I think it's her best. you've got such a great space, I'll visit again soon. xo
Love "Housekeeping". I have to say that "Gilead" is probably one of my all-time favorites, though. I've read it now four times - such a treasure!
ReplyDeleteYep, I'm sold. Checking it out. ;)
ReplyDeletemmm, sun-bleached linens.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved Gilead, so I should really read Housekeeping. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteSun-bleaching is sadly outside the realm of February possibility, even in California. I might be able to freeze my sheets into crispness this week, but little else...
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm adding this to my reading list. Thanks for the recommendation :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it's a good pick for my book club?
ReplyDeletewhats the book about ?
ReplyDeletethanks so much for the recommendation. i've had a craving for a lovely read.
ReplyDeletei am going to put this on my to-read list...been looking for something to sink my teeth into!
ReplyDeleteOh this sounds really good. It's officially on my list!
ReplyDeletethanks for the recommendation!! cannot wait to check it out <3 xo
ReplyDeleteadding to my amazon list this moment! I'm reading Let the Great World Spin on your rec and it's spectacular. Maybe you should start a book club?
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore that book. My mom passed it on to me, like many of my other favorites.
