Valentine's Day 2011

This year I decided to play with crochet thread for the Valentine's Day cards. I just drew little lines with plain Elmer's glue and then stuck the thread right on. It looks like the glue will be really obvious but it flattens out a bit as it dries and it's fine. The balloons are just red felt hearts.

I was searching through my archives to see if I've adequately explained my Valentine's Day thing (obsessed, platonically) and I think I've covered it. In 2009 I gave it a whole week, complete with garlands, cookies, and cards. Oh, and I participated in Amanda's swap and Lauren and I became instant internet friends.

Last year Circe got a new bandanna and I sent goodies to Lily and became obsessed with her work (and eventually purchased two paintings that I treasure) and we became friends and I got goodies from cevd, who was already a friend. I can't find any record of my cards, but I definitely made brownies. Shaped like hearts.

In summary, Valentine's Day is good for friends.

Also, I haven't decided what to bake yet. But I still have several days for that.

  2. I love the adoration you have for valentine's Day! It makes me want to do the same - make it a day of highlighting ALL the people I love in my life, platonic, friendly, and family included. Thanks for the inspiration, as ever!

  4. Try making macarons! They're perfect for Valentine's Day, I think. And so, so pretty.

  5. i'm so pleased that you kept speaking to me even though my v-day bath fizzes for you were an abject failure! (i mean, they sort of fizzed, but the tester i tried at home sort of turned the tub into starchy soupiness).

as you're not on twitter, i'll repeat the questionable holiday benediction we F train commuters received from an elderly jamaican with a boom box this morning: "ladies on the train, i wish you a valentine-day of happiness intellectually, financially, sexually."

  7. Hi there. This has nothing to do with your post but I didn't know where to put it. : ) I know you like poached eggs as do I. In a fit to find a meatless monday meal for the husb and me yesterday, i found a recipe for "Peppery Pasta Carbonara With Poached Egg". It's not meatless as it calls for bacon, but I made it anyway. DELICIOUS. I think I followed the directions, and I love that you just use the pasta water (already heated/simmering) to poach the eggs. Might be something you'd like!

  8. Love these! In fact, your hand-made valentines inspired me to make my own this year. I'm pretty sure I pulled my ideas from a card you created with a heart cut out of brown paper and lace showing through? Was that you? You can see my version here: http://sarahfritzler.blogspot.com/2011/02/blog-post.html

Well, if it was you, then thanks. And if not, I still love all your cards!

  9. Sarah C.'s post just made me drool. Stupid carbs! (How I love you.)

Anyway, those paintings are gorgeous, and now they are on my short list. Your cards are lovely, too. I swear, you're my much younger (hipper) twin sister I never knew I had. For all their claims to singularity, our alma mater sure does bread a type, huh? Let's call it Intellectual Chic. ;)

  10. Here in Sweden, Valentine's Day isn't such a big deal. But I was raised in the U.S. and I really miss all the pomp and circumstance! I totally wish my friends would give me heart shaped brownies!

  11. These are sweet. What will you think of next? I've never been a big Valentine's person, always thought it was such a Hallmark holiday. But making things at home makes it personal, and not the slightest bit cliche.

  12. They are so cute! I love valentines day too. I might have to make a card for Corey this year instead of buying one.

  13. @ MICHELLE - I am scared of macarons. But keep meaning to try my hand at them. Maybe this will be the time.

@ lauren - I loved that bath fizzy! Maybe I'm not very experienced with fizzies, but I was totally impressed. And it smelled amazing. And I love the benediction. I can hear it in my head.

@ Sarah C. - That sounds so good! I'll just have to convince D that eggs on pasta is a good idea. He makes fun of my need to put eggs on everything.

@ Sarah Fritzler - Totally wish I could claim credit, but I don't think that was me. Your cards are gorgeous! Love them.

@ Jules - Intellectual chic is cracking me up. Do you know that I brought my entire crafting cabinet with me to college? And squeezed it into my dorm room? Totally worth it.

  17. These are so sweet! I can't wait to see what you bake for the occasion. I'm not doing cookies this year, instead making my very first banana cream pie for my boyfriend. He's one of those weird non cake loving types. I guess it's true, opposites attract!

  18. I have completely forgotten Valentine's Day this year. I will hang my garland tomorrow morning before work, but otherwise it's been too busy with work things and my sister-in-law's birthday on Wednesday. Alas.
