The wedding was way up north in wine country, so we had lots of driving to do this weekend. I know we could have flown, but with all the time you spend waiting in airports it doesn't end up being the biggest advantage. And with the car, we were able to make stops for important things like happy hour with friends and the Tapatio chips I've been dying to try (verdict - good, but INTENSE).
The wedding was beautiful (and they served prosecco + lemonade for the ceremony and I love having ceremony drinks) and it's always good to catch up with people we don't get to see often enough.
Driving long distances like this feels so quintessentially Californian. I have a love/hate relationship with cars in general and usually opt to take the bus here in the city, but I have to admit that I have a weakness for road trips. It is just so unbelievably beautiful out there. I even love the long empty stretches with nothing but truck stop diners and windmills and the sun beating through the windshield and the gritty feeling you get in your hair when you stop for gas and the wind gusts around you. There's something magical there.
Those last 3 sentences are perfect. (I love the 5.)
ReplyDeletewhat a lovely weekend! great pics, btw.
ReplyDeletesounds great! I've never heard of ceremony drinks but I'm pretty sure ever wedding I've ever been to would have been improved by them, such a super idea.

I spent 2 weeks driving through CA this summer and it was the best trip of my life. Sometimes it's nice to slow the pace rather than catch flights everywhere. Glad you had a good time!

I completely know what you mean about the draw of roadtrips - and I miss the gritty gusts of desert air on the pauses for gas and refreshments. As efficient and amazing as I find the subways here in New York there will always be a part of me that misses the desert heat of (Southern) California.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I just moved from LA to St. Louis, and your last paragraph about loooong California drives gave me a pang of longing, even though I get completely antsy in road trips. Looks like a really pretty wedding!
ReplyDeletei love roadtrips! i don't do them often enough...
ReplyDeletei want that pastry!
ReplyDelete"...stop for gas and the wind gusts around you"
ReplyDeletethat, my dear, is one of the most beautifully understated moments of california roadtripping that i love, that i miss, that you captured perfectly.
Looks like you had beautiful weather! Those ceremony drinks sound perfect!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful pictures! Totally agree about the advantages of road tripping. Hope you had a fabulous weekend :-) xxx
ReplyDeleteLooks like a gorgeous wedding! There's definitely something special and different about driving up the 5, especially when it's in it's dust bowl state (what, like, 3/4 of the year?).
ReplyDeleteLove the photography, any tips for taking such gorgeous pictures?

i really, really miss driving through the grapevine - the ramshackle farmhouses back against the hills that i fantasize about retiring in, the terrifying tule fog i hope for anyway, a big cup of soda and an old mix tape.
ReplyDeleteI love theses photos. Really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYOU WERE TWO BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE.
