Saturday, briefly

I had a bridal shower! It wasn't even a little bit terrifying! I don't do birthday parties and I was really nervous leading up to this, but Emily and my sister understand me well and they threw an amazing party with plenty of bourbon spiked punch. Being surrounded by so many of the women I love ended up being pretty awesome. Also, there were ribs and pie.

Also over the weekend, but not pictured - endless errands, ring shopping for D (!), lots of lists.

We're 2.5 weeks out and not ready. I should probably be freaking out more, but I'm having a hard time getting up the energy.

  6. aw, rachel, i'm so glad it was lovely - and i'm so proud of you for surviving! (that sounds weird, maybe, but i don't do birthday parties, either, and there's nothing like the I MADE IT! feeling after a gathering).

you will be ready, and it will be fantastic. go team wedding!

  9. it's hard being the center of attn and opening up presents in front of everyone and thinking of nice things to say about something like a coffee grinder or popsicle sticks (hehe) but you did great. such an elegant shower, and so nice to spend time with you before you're a mrs. btw, just because your busy, don't think it exempts you from attending the 10 year reunions :)

  12. This is my kind of bridal shower! How fun! It must be so nice to have people throw you a shower that's truly reflective of what you want. Love it!

Having just gone through this two months ago, I totally know what you mean. It helped me to make list after list, dividing and conquering between my fiance and I, and keeping my head down and working on crossing things off, one by one. I prioritized the items that I had to have, leaving those I wouldn't be so upset about if they didn't happen at the end of the list.

Then I promised to completely let go the day before and just breathe and enjoy. It worked! Sure, some stuff wasn't as finished as I would have liked and a few minor things went wrong. But allowing myself to check out of crafting & planning mode was worth it. I barely noticed that day.

We were both so present on our wedding day and so fully emotionally "in" each moment. We both wish we could do it all over again! I'm really happy that I stuck to making sure our day was ours, and that we fully owned every moment and didn't let people tell us what we "should do." Letting go really allowed me to have so much fun, from the moment I woke up until the very last minute of the evening.

  13. @ lauren - I'm glad I'm not alone on the no birthday party ban. I should have known you'd be on board. I do like throwing parties for other people, which always seems less socially awkward.

@ Kristin - Hey, I did not have to pretend to be excited about the popsicle sticks or coffee grinder! They are amazing! As soon as I have a spare moment, there will be homemade popsicles in my freezer. And yes, I will not use the wedding as an excuse to avoid the reunion, tempting as that may be - you'll be seeing us there!

@ Kristine F. - Aw, thanks for sharing the encouraging words. I'm hoping to get to that place too. (Actually think I'm approaching it now, because I am so okay with slashing projects I had initially thought I was dead set on).

  17. absolute gorgeous simplicity. you are a one lucky gal. i had a lovely shower thrown for me (thankfully only one!) 2 years ago and i certainly felt the gift part so awkward with all eyes on me! ...though i suppose it was a good warm up for the wedding when all eyes were on me (& the mr.) again :)
