Utterly indulgent

Scents do something to me, trigger memories and emotions in an intense way. I had a full on hissy fit when my sister wanted to buy the same perfume as me. I won't tell you how old I was because it sounds like something a teenager would do and I was not a teenager. Not by a long shot. I just don't feel comfortable when I have a scent twin that's close to me in real life. It creeps me out.

A few weeks ago Anabela posted about CB I Hate Perfume, and I hopped over to his gallery. My jaw dropped. Try it. Go read the descriptions and look at the bottles. Even if you don't want to buy, it's a nice way to spend a half hour. (I did end up buying, so be forewarned.)

Tea/Rose was an obvious choice. Black tea and homegrown flowers definitely top my list of simple pleasures. It smells like an English garden, not like your grandmother's sitting room.

I was sorely tempted by Under the Arbor (crushed grape leaves, wood, moss and earth) and In the Library (novels, leather, cloth and wood polish) but I settled for Memory of Kindness (tomato vines and fresh earth). It smells sharp and fresh.

I've been alternating them according to my mood. I only got the little sample sizes, and I'm pretty sure they will last for a very long time because it's completely undiluted and all you need is a couple dabs.

  8. I absolutely love the words used to describe these little perfumes!!! Just saying crushed grape leaves, moss and earth in the same sentance practically seals the deal for me!! And don't feel *too bad about throwing a fit in regards to having a scent twin--I did the same thing...although she would never know...and I can't say I'm completely over it yet (!!) oh my. haha.

  9. I absolutely love niche parfumes. My favorites are Aire by Profumi di Pantelleria and Premier Figuier Extreme by L' Artisan.

  12. This line has been getting lots of good buzz. The packaging is amazing, and I love the concept, but it's so hard for me to buy new fragranced things online.

  17. I have At the Beach 1966 and In the Summer Kitchen and love both of those scents. They are both very summery scents but even in cooler weather a great way to give yourself a whiff of warm weather.

  19. I've been told I smell like old ladies because I like lavender and rose and apparently only old ladies like smelling of either. I'm sorely tempted by the rose one!

  25. My boyfriend and I were in NYC visiting and he had heard of this place on NPR like 3 years ago, but had kept it on his list of things to see. It was FANTASTIC! I had the head cold of my life that day and it was still fantastic!

Adle- we got burning leaves as well and it's incredible. Also a russian tea caravan, which totally brings me back to my host mother making tea for me in Slovakia. Amazing.

  26. Can't believe a discussion of perfume oils is happening and no one has mentioned Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, but perhaps their appeal is primarily to a more counter-culture set of interests. At any rate, the Lab is famous for nonstandard pure oil perfume mixes, inspired by seasons (especially fall), mythologies, and literatures (a whole line of scents inspired by Lewis Carroll, a limited edition line based on Dracula, etc.) You don't even have to be a goth-sympathizer to enjoy a scent called "Black Lace" - incidentally, my favorite scent of all time from anywhere.

  27. That looks like nice perfume. I love perfumes a lot. My best perfume is Aqua Di Gio by Armani. It has amazingly long lasting aroma.

  29. (...think I did something wrong there - here it is again:)

I just spent an hour ecstatically going from scent to scent on his website.. to find out he doesn't ship to Europe. I suppose it's for the better, as I had my shopping cart filled to the point of bankruptcy already :).
Thank you for the link! I find your blog refreshing - gorgeous photos.
(And if I ever get to go to New York, that store is no 1 on my list!)
