Too much?

Is it appropriate to wear a gold sequined jacket to someone's wedding this weekend? I'm kind of worried that it will look overly attention-grabby.* D thinks I think too much.

gold sequins!
{gold sequins!}

Back up option is a super wide gold sequined belt. Either way I'll be wearing a black silk dress.

* I, personally, would have been thrilled if someone had shown up decked out in sequins (well dressed wedding guests make for the best photos).

  2. It's awesome, Do it!! It used to be you shouldn't wear black to a wedding..

  3. i say, barring a long white flowing dress, as long as my guests look awesome i'd be glad to have them wear whatever makes them look MOST awesome. and that jacket with a black silk dress? sounds like an excellent choice.

  4. Absolutely! Awesome jacket over a nice black silk dress? Sounds perfect.

  5. beautiful Jacket and will look great with a black dress - i agree, I think bar full length white OR (as an in-law took upon herself at my sisters wedding - and was laughingly referred to as Morticia Adams by everyone at the wedding for her troubles lol) Full length Black, colour/design isn't as important at a wedding as it is to meet the wedding type appropriately (evening black tie/afternoon tea etc)

  6. I too would be thrilled to see sequins at my wedding! That jacket with a black silk dress sounds like a divine outfit. You know the bride and groom and their personalities so you're the best person to judge how they'd react and what kind of wedding it's going to be.

  7. I would wear this (to a wedding or not) in a heartbeat! Sounds like a fab ensemble--do it!!

  8. my sister wore that exact outfit to a wedding and I think she looked awesome and appropriate!

  9. DO IT. it will be absolutely fabulous.

  10. I'll be the sole naysayer and say that I agree that it's too attention-grabby. But I am someone who worries about this when attending other people's weddings, too, so I probably also tend to overthink these things.

For any other occasion, though (ok maybe not a funeral), I'm sure that outfit would be awesome.

  11. Definitely wear it. I'd rather have 100 sequined, glittered and bedazzled guests in my wedding pictures than be the only person looking fabulous in a picture full of drab people.

  12. I have a similar gold sequined jacket, and I have avoided wearing it to weddings for the same reasons!
    BUT
I feel that your friends are cooler than mine and would be down with it. Consider the bride. Will she think you look fab and love it? Or will she think you look (too) fab and be jealous? Have fun!

  13. Do it. Stop thinking about it - like you said, well dressed wedding guests make for the wonderful photos...and conversation. A friend of ours made quite the entrance in his seersucker suit.

  14. Do it! It looks fabulous. Plus I think your comment about being excited if someone wore this to your wedding says it all!

  15. Wear it! If you have an opportunity to wear sequins, ever, I say take it :)

  16. wear the heck out of that jacket! it's awesome!

  17. do it.

we NEED to see a photo of you in it at YOUR wedding!

  18. Definitely not too much! I think you'll look fantastic. And it's not like you're pairing it with a white dress, right? ;)

  19. Totally agree with anon. Consider the bride. If she would love to have guests in sequins (who wouldn't?), then go for it!

  20. only hard rule is no white, i say rock it.

  21. I seriously JUST had this convo with my bf for his friend's wedding. I was going to wear a sequin skirt. At the end, I decided not to because 1. it was green sequins (very bold) and 2. I didn't know the couple. I would say a light gold jacket would be appropriate though. It's fun and festive!

    ReplyDelete
  22. i'm a firm believer in sequins so if you're going to rock them, do them justice and wear the jacket. i'm sure it'll be fab and the bride will probably even compliment you!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Awesome. Sequins say celebration - isn't that an important part of a wedding? It says our friends are thrilled for us!

  24. I think as long as you arn't wearing a wedding dress or nothing at all you'll be fine. I always fuss about what to wear to weddings and then realise that everyone will most probably be looking at the bride and not me... and if they are looking at me it's probably time to worry!

  25. I say go for it! It's festive and pretty.

The only two things I wouldn't wear at someone's wedding, because I feel they ARE too attention-grabby, including anything ivory & white that looks bridal (hello! white lace? not ok), and something super shocking, like a long red or hot pink dress. ;) Long red dresses are beautiful, but definitely grab lots of attention.

  26. Don't care about what others will think because it's not worth it. Wear it if you really want, but wear it with confidence and you'll wow everyone :)

  27. I'd say work it, especially if you love it, and no question about it being okay if it's a late afternoon/evening event!

  28. I think its a great idea. Definitely check it out..on one condition. Tell me: Where DID you find such a dreamy jacket?

  29. I rocked a gold, sequined mini with black tights to my stepsister's wedding last year and got more compliments that night than I've ever gotten in my life. Rock the sequins!

  30. I personally would go for the belt. Only because of my personal style not so much about going over the top. But either way I think it's fun.

  33. @ Jamie and Kristy - I'm almost embarrassed to admit that it is a DIFFERENT sequined jacket than I wore at my wedding. Yes, I have two, which I realize is totally unnecessary, but one is a jacket and one is a shrug. This one is a jacket and very Golden Girls (think Blanche), which naturally endears me to it.

  34. I think yes as long as the mood is festive enough! Afternoon garden wedding? Maybe no. Evening affair? Why not?!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would wear it! Have fun! xo.

  36. First time commenting! I think it would be great - it would make me feel like you are excited to be there - that you took the time to dress up for me. I live in the PNW and people rarely dress up for anything. I love to see when people make an effort and get dressed up nicely for events. Go for it and have fun!

  37. If someone had shown up to my wedding in a gold sequined jacket, I would have been mad jealous (in a good way) and wondered why I hadn't thought of it myself.

It's totally appropriate. Rock it! Not like you're wearing a white gown or something.

  38. I guess this all depends on who's wedding it is and if they would mind. If they're a close friend and wouldn't read anything into then they I would say go for the jacket. But if the people tend to be more insecure or you're not sure how they would take it then I would say go with the safer option of the belt.

  39. Love the jacket, I say go for it! Just downplay your accessories to let the sequined jacket shine. Ps. where did you get it?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Go for the jacket, Rachel!
As a stylist, and a fellow Rachel, I say- go for the gold!(jacket, that is...;))

    ReplyDelete
  41. I LOVE it!! And i think it's totally appropriate to wear to a wedding!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think it would be lovely and not attention grabbing at all!! A white 2 piece skirt suit said woul be attention grabbing! My co-worker wore that to my wedding.

  43. If you can't wear a gold sequined jacket to a wedding, WHERE DO YOU WEAR IT? Go for it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i am not reading all these comments. i only hope that every other reader told you to rock it. xo.

  45. I think a sequined jacket is PERFECT for a wedding! YES!

    ReplyDelete
  46. DO IT.

I'm glad Im not the only one who's partner says they think too much. Though mine phrases it as "I don't know where you get these thoughts from."

  47. How completely gorgeous is that jacket! Definitely wear it, it's stunning.

  48. Absolutely wear it, it looks like an amazing piece and a great addition to a black silk dress. I hope we get to see what you decide!

  49. you know i'm on team sparklepants and agree, emphatically, with everyone else. let me also say how excellent it is that you have two such pieces in your wardrobe, both because now they can have long, glam conversations with each other in your closet and because the only thing better than one sequined piece is another sequined piece. they're like serotonin in textile form.

  50. i stumbled in from somewhere.... and am really enjoying your words.

oh, and sooo wear the gold one way or another.

  54. My sister's man has the same problem (not with sequins, that would be funny) but he never wants to wear his kilt to weddings because he's afraid he'll upstage the groom. But I think its awesome if guests come decked out in their best stuff. When I eventually get married I'll tell him that he has to wear it. I think he just doesn't like fielding questions & comments about if he's in the wedding party or if he's wearing it the traditional way.

  55. Def not too much! Will look great with a simple black dress - it'll give the dress an extra kick and you'd look fab! Especially if this is a nighttime affair. Haha, I almost feel guilty now b/c i almost always wear sequins or a bright color or glitter to every wedding! hopefully haven't taken too much attention away from the bride or gotten anyone ticked off....

  56. It'd be perfect, definitely wear it. I hope that people wear loads of sequins when I get married

  57. whoopsy, i bet i'm too late as usual. well, i hope you wore it.

  58. I live by the words 'It's better to be over-dressed than under-dressed!'... So I say do it! Sequins are in fashion so you might not be the only one wearing them and standing out anyway =) Good Luck!

  59. It's adorable!! Weddings are a celebration and sequins are never 'too much' for a celebration! :)

  60. Ooh, that combo sounds like an absolute dream. Haha, I plan for my future wedding invites to say, "please wear whatever makes you feel FABULOUS!!!".

I love weddings so much, and at the end of the day, you want the people at yours to have as much fun as you do. I think the more fantastic you feel, the more amazing the time :)

Can't wait to see your frock too xx
