Bottega Louie

I'm currently going through withdrawals. The courthouse is conveniently located a mere 7 blocks from the best macarons in the city. I was there for a month. I don't really want to tell you what that box* costs because then you could do the math.

d's macaron
{mandarin macaron}

I was kind of counting on my juror's fees to make up for this expensive habit. Probably should have checked to see if I was actually going to get those fees before I started indulging (turns out, federal or state employees aren't eligible for our $15 a day, which is fair enough, given that we get our usual salaries while we serve). Whoops.

*You can save money by getting them in a bag, if you are going to eat them right away, but if you're planning to transport them at all, you'll want the box so that you don't squash them flat. Also, it's pretty.

  2. mandarin macaroons? whoa.

    a friend of mine tweeted the other day about bringing back three dozen raspberry cookies from Paris. i was excited - thinking that he meant raspberry macarons, perhaps from Laudree - until his girlfriend mentioned that they were just from the grocery store and nothing special.

    but these are something special, methinks.

  6. Personally, I think La Provence (on Olympic) have the best macarons in LA. But Bottega Louie come in close second!

  10. Bottega Louie is definitely amazing...but there are definitely better macarons in L.A...if you haven't tried Paulette (I think they may have had some legal issues and are called Lette now) on Charleville Blvd. and Beverly Dr., you will thank me later. There is also a second location in the Little Tokyo mall in downtown LA that sells the Paulette macarons.

    Yours Truly,

  11. Just found your blog through Cupcakes and Cashmere and I love it! I feel your macaron pain. Luckily, here in Boston we don't have many macaron joints. Unluckily, this means I use this as an excuse to travel to Paris. Luckily, this is a win-win. ;) Cheers!

  20. Thanks for the recommendations, guys!

    I like, but don't love, the macarons at La Provence in Brentwood, but I'll admit I haven't tried the one on Olympic. Maybe they do a better job?

    Macarons can also be hit or miss, so I like to give everyone multiple chances. I got one fleur de sel macaron at BL that wasn't perfect - the texture was a little off. I totally took it back to the counter and got a replacement in a different flavor. Those cookies are too expensive to put up with inferior quality.

  21. If you love macarons as much as I do - and I am, too, a big fan of Bottega Louie's - check out the book "Mad About Macarons." My friend gave it to me for my birthday last week, and I was astonished that my first batch came out perfectly! I actually just posted about it on my blog. The book is so helpful, and explains the entire process - from start to finish - in a very detailed way. I was happy to stumble upon your blog, and I look forward to seeing what else you have in store. Ciao from a fellow Angeleno!

  24. Bottega Louie's Macarons are the best. They are beautiful and perfect, not all squashed and cracked like Paulette's! The guy at the counter told me the Chefs worked at Pierre Herme in Paris!! That certainly explains a lot!! Perfect pastries!! Merci, Bottega Louie! Je t'aime!!
