The weekend, briefly

Really just isolated snippets, because I didn't take my camera everywhere.

The best part about opening up some whipping cream is getting to put the leftovers in my coffee for a few days.

We made my favorite black bean salad and I added avocado. Why not?

Another family birthday party complete with a serious discussion of hot sauce, cupcakes, and a game none of us knew the name of that's a combination of telephone and pictionary. It was good. Here is my favorite drawing of the night, from D.

  3. mmm idk why i dont think to use heavy cream in coffee. my go-to use is to fluff up scrambled eggs.

  4. We make the same black bean salad (with avocado) but instead of the oil and vinegar use taco seasoning and Italian dressing. It makes a great side-dish, or topping for burgers at summer cookouts.

As for hot sauces, have you tried the Tabasco smoked chipotle? It's not too hot, but the smoked flavor is amazing on tacos (and eggs and popcorn and whatever else you want to put it on!)

    1. I'll probably be shunned for admitting this, but I don't like Tabasco! I'm not sure what it is (the vinegar? even though I normally can't get enough vinegar?) but it doesn't work for me. My standard is Tapatio, we also keep some Gringo Bandito on hand. My step sister has that crazy hot sauce collection shown above, so we were all envious.

    2. I'm not a fan of traditional Tabasco either, I love Tapatio too! It's the first thing I reach for when I eat at Mexican restaurants and they bring out those nice warm chips. The chipotle tastes nothing like their traditional sauce, it's really different than any other I've tried. It's not hot, it's spicy/smoky. Definitely an interesting zip to a lot of dishes.

  6. I just made aged white cheddar and dill scones a few days ago and have been using the leftover whipping cream in my coffee too! It's usually almond milk that I use, so I'll be sad when the carton of whipping cream is empty... but my thighs will thank me when I get back to almond milk :) Love your blog!

  7. I just opened some whipping cream this weekend too to make some baked eggs, I love the idea of using the rest of it in coffee! I'll have to do that and stop going out for morning coffee! :)

  8. Hi! I've been reading your blog for a while now - I love seeing new posts.

My husband and I are working on a little hot sauce project that we hope might turn into something bigger someday. Hot sauce is all over my radar now, so your testing caught my eye. We're currently working on two recipes, habanero pineapple and a three-pepper blend (red jalapeno/serrano/habanero). More variations to come as we perfect these.

Anyway - just a random, strange comment from a reader in Minnesota. Also, I agree with katherinelynn_04 - Tabasco Chipotle is delicious.

  13. Avocados & black bean salad are meant for each other. And that's also my favourite thing to do with leftover heavy cream. Can't let it go bad, right? ;)

  14. I need to know where your drinking glasses are from so we can put them on our wedding registry! I love the short and stout ones!

    1. Thanks - I love them so much! They're all Bormioli Rocco bodega glasses. The short stout ones are the mini size - I use them for tastings and they're exactly the right size for shaken cocktails. I have all three sizes and they work great together. I got ours here (mini, medium, large) but you can probably find them from other sources.
