{whipping cream}
Trader Joe's now has shelf stable whipping cream! I only keep whipping cream in the fridge from Thanksgiving through Christmas, so it's nice to have an option I can store in the cupboard. I was really glad I had it last week when I decided to make the salted caramel brownies last minute.
The container is fairly small, and once you open it you keep it refrigerated. It's ultra pasteurized, so if that skeeves you out then you won't like it. I have no issue with it and although ultra pasteurized milk in general tastes slightly different I didn't notice any difference in the final product when using this small amount. I haven't tried whipping it (not sure if the high pasteurization would change how well it whips and flavor is key in whipped cream) but I'm going to keep it around for impromptu batches of scones and things.
* Definitely thought it was a real (and hilarious) magazine when I was a kid. I still love it.
Ooo I should definitely try it! Trader Joe's always has the best things. How did we live without it before it was here?!

TJ is my weakness! I'm pretty sure we always buy whatever they are sampling that day too:-) xoxo
ReplyDeleteI saw this a couple of times, but would always just look and leave it. Maybe I will try. Trader Joes also just got in a coconut spray. Love it!
ReplyDeleteif i'd had access to a good tattoo parlor at the age of, say, twelve, it's entirely possible i'd have one of the ladies of the fearless flyer somewhere on my person.
ReplyDeleteI could be down with that.
DeleteThis is good to know, thanks for sharing.

OMG! We just made whipped cream for the first time this weekend--did it the old fashioned way, too, totally by hand. Grueling!
ReplyDeleteI have never done this! I'm always afraid my arms will wimp out half way through!
Deleteam a huge trader joe's fan but never saw one until early 2000's maybe? i had no idea they started in the 50's. (yes, i just googled it).
ReplyDeleteI think they spread across the country relatively slowly.
DeleteThey were a staple in So Cal in the 80s but they were much more low budget - our local one was in a really strange neighborhood and it was very dark and warehouse-like. But so good. And a lot of their products are still the same! I get nostalgic looking at some of their packaging.
Love reading the fearless flyer! I am weird and like to whip my own but it's great to have a pantry option!
ReplyDeleteWait, you whip by hand?! You're the second commenter who does that! Now I feel lazy. : )
DeleteI always whip my own (it tastes a million times better) but I use the KitchenAid for muscle. I think my arms wouldn't stand up to the workout.
I've been using this stuff since I found it a couple of weeks ago - isn't it great?!! I love the fact that I don't have to run out to the store every time I need whipping cream now! I can stock two or three in my pantry!
