The weekend, (very) briefly

afternoon

popsicles
{popsicles}

It was quiet this weekend. And warm. I love that. I didn't feel like lugging my camera around, so I didn't. Toying with the idea of Instagram and I tested it out a bit this weekend, but I'm a little resistant. I'll probably give in soon but I don't want it to replace my beloved camera.

My current favorite cookie is the ginger-date-molasses one from Tavern. It is intensely flavored and very chewy. If you happen to be in my neighborhood, I highly recommend stopping in to pick one up. I know everyone else swears by their chocolate chip cookies, but I'm not as big a fan.

D made popsicles and we've been eating them all week, even though the weather promptly switched back over to chilly once the weekend was over. I'll share the recipe tomorrow. They're insane.

Not pictured -

We hit up the Gilt warehouse sale and I got my $5 admission worth in free (mediocre*) drinks and Kind bars that I smuggled out in my pockets. There was nothing worthwhile. I'm not a big fan of Gilt anyways.

I dropped by our local Heath to stare at the summer collection pieces a bit more and decided that really the shallow salad bowl and the dessert bowls would be the best choices, if we ever decide to pull the trigger. A word of warning - the glaze on the literally all the platters (I went through the whole stack) looked flawed to me. I asked about it and they said it was part of the character of the glaze, but I'm just not a huge fan of the effect. I would highly recommend checking them out before committing. I actually like to do this with all Heath purchases, because they are handmade and you might like one variation a little more than another. I'll sometimes exchange pieces if I get them home and realize they aren't quite right with what I already have. I know, picky. But when you pay $130 for a salad bowl, you better plan to love it to death and use it your entire life.

* I'm not sure how other people feel about acai alcohol, but I'm not on board. Blah.

  1. Oh dear. Your popsicle recipe might push me over the edge. I've been thinking about getting a popsicle tray since last summer but haven't done it yet.

    1. They are so worth it! (Especially because they are usually pretty cheap and you can just put straight up juice in them all summer)

  2. we have the shallow salad bowl and i love it. it is the perfect size for salad, as it leaves room for tossing and since it's shallow, all the good bits don't sink to the bottom. we use it for pasta too and it is perfect.

    1. I really do love that one - shallow salad bowls make so much more sense than the super deep ones you see most of the time.

  4. have you been to the heath store in sausalito...the seconds are just as nice as the firsts...usually after you inspect them all and for less money. check it out.

    1. I have! Sadly, they didn't have any seconds for the summer collection while we were there.

The LA store has seconds as well, but people sometimes don't find them because they just store them on the bottom shelf all around the store, rather than in one particular area.

Most of the pieces I have are carefully chosen seconds! I love that discount.

  5. I'm convinced your apartment might have the best natural light EVER :) My great aunt used to make the best ginger molasses coolies and send them to me in college, and they will forever make me nostalgic...

    1. Ha! Thank you but I actually curse the lack of light in our apartment regularly. There are only two areas where it's easy to get a shot (which is why you see the same part of my kitchen counter all. the. time.) and a limited number of hours each day where I get any light at all. I go nuts shooting during those windows!

  6. instagram is great - promise. definitely a new way of looking at the world. heath is amazing - think me and my fiance will register for some goodies there. we could never afford to actually get that stuff for ourselves. then we just have to use it all VERY carefully (always easier said than done, right?).

    1. Yes! Luckily the Heath pieces really hold up. We have family members who've had theirs for decades and passed them down and they're still perfect. Very sturdy.

This may sound terrible, but if you are gifted pieces from Heath and live close enough, you can return them for credit and then buy seconds as replacements. People are usually reluctant to buy you seconds as gifts, but they are just as good and your money goes a bit further so you could get a few extra pieces.

  7. While I do love me some instagram, there is also a detachable lens you can buy for the iPhone. It's supposed to be pretty neat, it gives wide angle shots and maybe fish eye if I recall correctly. But if you want better pics for the blog with your phone (and don't want to lug your camera around with you) it's available here:

    1. Innnteresting. I'll check it out. Although what I like about my phone is that I don't have to carry lenses around! I'd have to see how compact they are.

    1. Ha! I hadn't either, but I think they've been heavily sponsoring events around here to get a foothold. I've been to two different things recently where all the drinks were made with acai alcohol. I don't love it. (But shouldn't complain about free drinks!)

  9. Where are your popsicle molds from?

    1. I have this mold, and I'm happy with it. You do have to let the popsicles warm up a little to get them out of the mold, so I give them a few minutes on the counter (once they are completely frozen) and then pop them out and store them in a bag in the freezer so it's easy to pull them out quickly. I really like the shape of the finished popsicles (is that weird?). They feel so professional!

  10. I am trying to picture what acai booze would taste like and I keep coming up with cloying. I can't even get it in a drink...mojito? Martini? Ugh. Your afternoon light looks dreamy. It was warm here in Santa Barbara as well!

  11. Pretty pictures (that cookie looks DIVINE) -- I can see why you'd hate to give your camera up.

Instagram certainly is addicting. I was just thinking about how I never use my actual camera for blogging any more -- it's literally all Instagram... And everyone's doing it more and more, which I'm not terribly certain is a good thing.

BUT, that being said, at least use it for yourself -- it's so fun!

  12. supremely excited about your popsicle recipe, and totally understanding about the instagram conundrum. i often think about how much simpler it'd be if i switched out my week in objects for a round up of instagram shots, but i never do. there's something about the heft of the camera that makes it all feel more official, not to mention the actual quality of the shot. still though, i appreciate instagram for being able to capture small moments, nicely...and without all that heft.
