Weekend notes:

My tendency when things get frantic is to go a little crazy, leading to the sort of unfortunate spiral where you realize you haven't eaten or showered in a week. I've been trying to change the pattern by instituting a new rule - when you have twenty things to do and only enough time to do half of them, bathe first (a shower will suffice if necessary), preferably with a glass of wine, then eat something, then proceed to your task list. I can almost guarantee that you'll find at least a few things on the list that no longer seem quite as vital.

D had his wisdom teeth removed, approximately ten years after everyone else did. Lack of insurance makes you extra cautious of getting dry socket, so he's been leaning heavily on ice cream, gelato and shakes.

We went to a few of our favorite places downtown, which is a treat because we almost never have time to stop down there. I'll share more later but the awesome neon signage is from Grand Central Market, my absolute favorite place in LA (I have a passion for markets and grocery stores).

We were supposed to split those tacos but I ended up having to do the lion's share of the work (see: wisdom teeth removal, dry socket potential). I would never presume to label anything "the best taco" because tacos vary widely and so many factors are involved and you always have to know what to order. El Atacor #11 is up there, though. The asada narrowly beat out the barbacoa this time, but it's a contentious battle.

  1. Looks like a very tasty weekend, and I completely agree about the to-do list. When it's particularly bad, I put showering and eating on it. At least it's one more thing I can cross off and feel accomplished about!

Best wishes to D. for a quick and complete recovery, sans dry-socket!

  3. Oh my! I can relate to this post so much. Truth be told I didn't shower yesterday, I was up to my neck with work and suddenly realized my house needed some serious clean-up, so serious it was more urgent that showering. I promised my daughter I would get my act together today and I'm just hoping for a weekend of relaxation like this one... and a bath, of course.

  4. Glad to have ya back. You've been missed! Sorry to hear that you've been so busy, but happy to know that you know how to relax and unwind (I wish I had a higher capability to do so). I've been out of college for summer for 2 weeks and all I can think about is preparation for next semester. I'm working on, great tips!
    Cute toes!
Hope D has a speedy recovery!

  9. I love that bath photo. Also, I love that you described the process of deciding between taco meats a "contentious battle." I thought I was the only one who took such decisions so seriously! It might be a Claremont Colleges thing (they did teach us to analyze things to death), but either way, I think I love you. ;)

p.s. Last week was insane for me with a mile long to-do list. I skipped meals almost every day of the week. Sigh.

  10. choosing a favorite taco is like choosing a favorite child: who could bear such a decision? luck to D and his socket; my frontier dentist recommended i pack mine with a black tea bag when i had my one (?) wisdom tooth out a couple of years ago, but i don't trust his advice in *all* things. fortitude and tacos to you both!

  11. Your pictures made me want to do all those things! Including wolfing down about 4 of those tacos, if not more! I linked to your strawberry shortcake recipe on my blog.

  22. Having a dry socket is seriously unpleasant, so that's one very good reason to be cautious. Hee hee, lots of ice cream is good, though it can get pretty boring after a while. I hope D recovers from his wisdom tooth recovery quickly. Just follow the dentist's orders and add in some extra caution and you'll be good in no time!
