Friday flowers (finally)

Look! I bought flowers!

decanted iris
{decanted iris}

Let's just pretend that I didn't have to unceremoniously dump a huge pile of stuff on the floor in order to clear a large enough space to take a picture of them.

The iris are in an enormous crystal decanter that I found for $10 (originally $200) at Macy's when I was supposed to be Christmas shopping for other people. The nice salesman gave me an additional discount so it was only $9.20 with tax. And since I don't decant things I justified it by telling myself I could use it as a vase. Done.

I brought heart shaped treats to work today. I sent a flurry of cards in the mail. I am perfectly content to wallow in paste and red paper and leave the romance out of it, thank you.

Valentine's Day is tricky - I love it, platonically. I love baked goods swathed in pink icing. I love seeing cheesy cut out hearts everywhere. I love paper lace doilies. I do not love bouquets of tight budded red roses and diamond earrings and fancy restaurant reservations and high expectations.

D and I just realized that this will be the first Valentine's Day we've spent together in three years. No, we aren't doing anything in particular. We aren't exchanging gifts, because I always feel like it's a bit awkward and forced unless you happen to have a brilliant idea. One year, in high school, Dustin bought me a hamster. Best gift ever.* Actually, I got a coupon (with a hand illustrated hamster) and then I got to pick out my own hamster. Because really the logistics of something like that are tricky - you cannot in good conscience stick a rodent in someone's locker as a surprise.

Hope your weekend is lovely, Valentine's Day or not, with or without fuzzy rodents.

*Absolutely not a hint that I want another hamster. As much as I loved Creeper, I'm done.

  1. I didn't know that you and D are a since-high school couple! We are, too. And we are all about practicality (and, um, beverages?) this Valentine's Day: I asked him for a Sigg bottle. He asked me for a travel mug. OH, ROMANCE.

  3. Was Creeper the one who hid in the dryer, given up for lost, until...and then lived to escape (and be found)many more times? I miss our hamsters. I especially miss you. Happy Valentine's, Sweet Pea!

  4. omg the idea of sticking a rodent in your locker is hilariously disturbing. we feel the same exact way about valentine's day in regards to the platonic aspects of the holiday. but we figured that out 9 years ago. xx

  5. Love the iris. My mom's favorite. She had them in her wedding.

    How cool that you and D have known each other so long!

  6. beautiful beautiful shot

    i've always thought it was sort of an artifical holiday...or it has become so. but i guess i would argue that about most holidays.

  7. Iris' are beautiful! (Is that how to make that plural?? i always get confused with words that end in s)

    Anyway, I share your love for Valentine's Day as well - the homemade kind of Valentine's Day. So much more romantic. I'd love to be a person that receives one of your Valentines!

  14. I love the hamster story, especially the part about the hand-illustrated coupon! I, too, had a hamster when I was younger and loved him but have no wish to be a hamster parent again.

  17. Cracking up at the fact that you received a hampster for Valentines Day...its sort of adorable! My hubby and I feel the same way about the holiday, parts of it are fun (Read: Going to our favorite restaurant if we happen to remember to make a reservation early enough) but we dont force it and try to make it more than it is.

  18. I am obsessed with having fresh flowers in the home- instant mood lift... but the smell of lilies are SO heavenly and Magical to me...I always fin myself buying lilies ONLY! Kind of like ordering the SAME thing off the menu. Anyway, LOVE your blog. Love the name. Love flowers. And In honor of you... I think I may just buy a something other than lilies tomorrow,

  19. Oh, and the phrase about loving Valentines Day platonic-ally (my spell check insists the word needs a hyphen- looks wrong and weird to me) anyway, perfectly put. I feel the same way. Like,
    "Valentines Day- let's be friends... but I'd rather not sleep together, thanks."

  22. three things i've learned:
    1. that you and dustykins are high school sweethearts;
    2. that dusty had a highly-developed sense of humor at the age of fifteen;
    2. that you are a good bargainer. the un-decanter is perfect for iris, and iris are perfect for a house still dressed in boxes.

    (and pssst...a little thank you post over at bigBANG. you are a GODDESS!)

  24. I love the decanter as vase! And your hamster story made me laugh. I will pictures hamsters leaping out of lockers for the rest of the day. And maybe some random day when I just really need a reason to smile!
