Way behind the times

I bought a pair of skinny jeans. Only about six years after the rest of you have been telling me to stop being a wimp. And right before they go out of fashion, apparently.

The embarrassing part is that they're from Forever 21*.  Yep. I purchased a pair of  jeans from F21 for $10.50 and they don't suck at all. And yes, they've been washed and dried and worn multiple times and they still look totally normal.

* I've been trying to a) reduce my shopping and b) subscribe to the quality vs. quantity rule, which makes F21 verboten. But I swear, I had a really good excuse to be in there at the time and also I tried very hard to find skinny jeans from multiple other, more reputable sources and all of them made my ass look so terrible that I nearly cried in many dressing rooms.

  1. well i'm behind even you, still haven't bought a pair. i am getting more mentally wrapped around the idea of even trying them on. i am such a wimp, and so stuck in my comfort zone with clothes, its not even funny.

but if they are going out of fashion soon does that mean i can hold off buying them a little longer??

  2. Ha! I'm so happy they're going out of style because I never could wear them (even though I adore them in certain outfits). I'm just too short and sturdy-legged (as Sart would say, ugh!) to carry them off. I'm so happy for the flare / trouser style that's back now!

  3. I love them. How can they be going out of fashion? If you see the girl that is still wearing them, looking so six years ago, that will be me!

  4. I love them too, and they are the one thing that Forever 21 actually does really well. Ten bucks! And great looking! So I support your decision there. :)

  5. Ahhh, great pair of jeans! And, so cheap! They seem like a fantastic purchase! xxxxx

  6. Good for you! No one could point any fingers when you pay that kinda price. What a steal!

I wish I could wear this style. It makes me look about 2 feet shorter than I actually am. :-/

  7. I've tried on multiple occasions to buy "quality" skinny jeans and I can't find a pair that fits me right. Gap, Levi's, J Crew, etc. etc. Not one pair. Ironically enough, the one pair that I do have that fits perfectly has and has been holding up for more than a year now is a pair I bought at Forever 21 for $9.50. So, yeah.

  8. I finally found a pair that I can feel comfortable in (Madewell) and probably paid too much. At $10.50 you can't go wrong!

  9. You're brave! I haven't worn skinny jeans in years!

  10. Yes, the only skinny jeans that have ever properly fit me are Madewell, the ones with a nice bit of stretch. SO comfortable. But I, too, am BESIDE MYSELF at the idea of flares being back in. They have always been my favorites, and I've worn them constantly since high school, even when they were not remotely in style. You know what they say...keep something long enough...

P.S. I can't believe I am old enough to talk about things I wore in high school coming back in style. Egads.

  11. So funny, I just bit the bullet, too. With cheapos, too. Figured, if I was going to try a trend this late in the game, paying good money made no sense. I do feel a little bada## when I am wearing them with boots, though. :)

  12. I dunno what F21 is, we don't have that in England, but I am a skinny jean devotee and have only ever bought them from super cheap shops over here like H&M and asos.com for the same reason as you say, for some reason they just look better than the expensive ones, and I also made a New Years Resolution to only buy quality over quantity. Great minds... I'm sure your arse looks lovely in them too :)

  14. haha..that's where I get my skinny jeans from too! Once a woman even asked me, "Oh, are those J-Brand?!" When I excitedly informed her that I got them at F21 for $9.50 she looked disgusted, as if they were suddenly un-cute. But I love them, and love them even more that they were $9.50. Enjoy your skinny jeans!

  15. It took me a while to make the skinny jean jump, but once I did AND started tucking them into boots, I started working on converting everyone else.. Finally got my sis-in-law to buy some after 3 years-- she is now a devotee! :-) I wear them more in winter with boots, preferring boot cut/flares with flip-flops in summer. Enjoy your skinnies!

  16. I've been wanting to get some. I'm so used to the flair look though. I figure I'll start off by rolling them up to my mid calf to give a retro look and slowly roll them down as I get more comfortable haha.

  17. @ Jane - I am average height, but not long legged and my legs are decently muscular, which is why I held off for so long. Surprisingly, these are pretty decent on me, despite not being 5'10 and a size 25 (which is what that model is!).

I also really, really love wide leg jeans, so I'm happy we'll be seeing more of those.

@ all my fellow F21 skinny jean devotees - thank you! I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

  18. Check out Gap, too. When they have sales (which is just about every day), their jeans are pretty cheap and, I've found, flattering for those of us with a little muscle on our bones.

  19. I love F21 for cheap things on-trend... you won't care as much if you don't still love them in 3 months.

  20. don't be ashamed! places like f21 are perfect for wanting to try out a trend and not being sure if its quite for you. you don't spend much money, and if it turns out its not for you, then at least you didn't commit to something pricer. coo-dos to you!! now go rock those jeans!!

  21. F21 jeans actually last for years, so in my opinion you're getting more than what you pay for with the $10.50 lineup. I would still consider you to be following your 'frugality' rule.

Oh and welcome aboard the bandwagon!

  22. I love skinny jeans. I also love your disclaimer, ha. I've only entered a F21 store once, and it overwhelmed me terribly. Nowadays, if I shop there, I do so online. xo.

  23. Oh, I SO feel you. I just bought some at Target (which I've also sworn off) for $9.99 and have been pleasantly surprised.

We're not way behind the times, we're just not so easily swayed! (At least that's what I keep telling myself)

  24. Hi Rachel! I've been following your blog for several weeks and I didn't realize that I visted often until your little hiatus (which by the way, you were missed!) I appreciate your creativity and I love your photography, it's inspiring. Anyway, I just had to comment to say thank you for keeping it real with this post. It made me love your blog that much more. Happy Thursday :)

  25. I think I did something worse.
I bought $6.50 "jeggings" from the target clearance rack.
They actually look like skinny jeans (thick enough) when I wear them, though. I didn't realize they were jeggings until I saw the tag. They are also ridiculously comfortable. Go figure.

  26. yeeah, i just bought a $10 faux leather mustard bag at the airport on the way home from vacation. it's kind of like you're saying, though.. i've been wanting to get one for a long time and didn't find a quality one that i feel in love with.. and i'm trying to save a buck, and i'm pretty sure this will quench my lust for a mustard bag altogether.

so i feel the cheap was a wise pick in this case.

  27. Ha! I just bought skinny jeans recently too, way behind trend... I got mine at the thrift store for like $3 after trying on about 40 pairs, and practically losing my mind. I was on a mission though! I love them, and I feel like they tripled my wardrobe because now all the proportions look right again if I wear something looser on top. I agree with the quality over quantity idea, though for me it's more about responsible consumption, and I feel that thrift stores are a (more frustrating but ultimately more fun) loophole. But it's not like you were buying multiple cheap jeans at Forever21.

  28. You won't believe, but the very same happened to me! I bought my first pair of skinny jeans last year ( before I thought I looked terrible on then!) and they are exactly those!! I LOVE then so much ( I live on then!!) that I've bought my fourth pair!!
