Soooooo ...

iphone
{iphone}

I'm still processing this big change. I've (rather smugly) had the cheapest possible cell phone with a pre-paid plan for years now and it finally broke me this weekend, when I had lots of texting/calling to do. I feel silly because I don't need this phone, but it will make my life a little easier. And they still had a few of the last model left, so it was cheaper than anything else in the store and we spent over an hour negotiating the best possible phone plan (always check for work discounts, and if the lowest package they have is still too much time for you, ask if you can get something lower that isn't advertised). Clearly, I'm still attempting to justify this purchase to myself.

So, joint cell phone plan! Does this officially make us a family?

Also, I need a case and I'm not liking anything very much. Love the stripes on this, but is the branding too obnoxious? Other recommendations?

And ... am I the only one who doesn't understand how people are getting flattering pictures from their iphones? I recoil in terror every time I turn on the camera and realize it's facing me, and usually from an incredibly unforgiving angle.

  1. welcome to the dark side. you'll kind of love it i think. and society 6 for a case. so many really, really good ones.

side note - i got a kate spade cover and found it so bulky i ended up dropping my phone 100x more than i did without it. also, the gold they use chips off, which is kind of obnoxious.

  2. I have a Kate Spade case, and the old model of phone, and I HATE the case. It doesn't fit quite right - it's way too big, so it is always slipping around and falling off. It is a different style than that one, so maybe it's different, but I would not recommend it.
As for photos, make sure that you download Instagram. The faux-retro filters are pretty flattering.

    2. I've heard you can throw it in the dryer for a few minutes and it's suppose to shrink a little. I've never tried it but it may work for you?

  3. J Crew has a really cool leather iPhone cover. It's under the men's section for some reason (because only men like leather...?). I've been kind of lusting after it, and it's reasonably priced. http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/accessories/smallleathergoods/PRDOVR~73827/73827.jsp

Or there's this wood one, which is really different. I've never seen anyone with this in person. http://www.nixon.com/headphones/barren-iphone-4-case-C1755.html

As to the pictures, it's helpful to hold it arm's length away, no flash, with the phone slightly above your head (same as when you're getting pictures taken).

    1. Interesting - I like the leather!

And thanks for the photo tips. I may just have to give up, because apparently I'm hopeless (and really, why would I need lots of pictures of myself?!)

  4. I had two of the "snap-on/ one-piece" cases break on me in under a month, so I recommend getting a 2-piece case, like this one: http://www.incipio.com/iPhone-4-4S-Cases-Accessories/Incipio-iPhone-4-4S-EDGE-Hard-Shell-Slider-Case.asp

(Which, by the way, has lasted ~20 months!)

Go look at the cases in person, it will help you recognize which are flimsy or poorly constructed. I do gaze at others' cute cases with envy from time-to-time, but having a case that breaks just won't cut it for me.

  5. After quite a few cases, I've settled on a rather cheap one from a UK store called Paperchase, which is probably not very helpful to you. It looks something similar to this - http://www.amazon.com/White-Flower-Slim-Cover-iPhone/dp/B005F2L47Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335377411&sr=8-1 - just a generic hard case, although mine has a slightly soft/rubbery feel to it. It's worked fine for me for 5 months or so. I also have a skin from bestskinsever.com.

  6. Welcome to the Other/Dark Side! I really love the cases at Society 6 - http://society6.com/cases - lots of artists contribute work. Or you can design your own at Get Uncommon: http://www.getuncommon.com/

  8. Try this- it's not Otterbox, so it's not the end-all, beat-all case (they really are great, if a bit bulky and not-so-great options), but it has the stripes you like, and you can customize colors, add your name, etc.

  10. oh, how i totally relate to the resist-as-long-as-possible theory. "rather smug" is the perfect descriptor. even when i got the fancy, flashy new phone i thought it'd be nice, but i had no idea i would love it as much as i do.

but oh, how i love it. particularly how it simplifies things. from directions to keeping lists (love!!) to mid-grocery-store-recipe-checking, i am so very smitten. having everything in one device is so helpful...panic-enducingly, sometimes, haha. "sweet - everything's in one spot! oh wait...crap...everything is in one place..."

but that thought goes away with quickly :o) welcome to the dark side. enjoy!

  12. I've tried Otterbox, didn't like it. To bulky and every time I tried to pull it out of my pocket it would stick and I'd struggle with it. I also had a Kate Spade case, but it breaks apart easily and was just didn't fit right. I LOVE society6.com. They have so many options for the design, you can even upload your own design and personalize it. The design of their cases also fits my phone like a glove and doesn't slip off, and isn't bulky. I also like speckproducts.com. They have some nice looking cases that are also more durable if you feel like you need more protection for your phone.

  15. i, like many others it seems... do not recommend the kate spade cases. they are bulky, and when you drop the phone they split apart and fly opposite directions. i just got a plain colored elago case and i like it better. slim fitting, just protective enough.

  19. Hooray! We bought our iphones the day after our wedding and became a family (plan) - it certainly made things more feel more official ;)

We bought them right before our california road trip honeymoon, and they definitely make life easier - I love just hopping in the car and not needing to plan ahead of time, and we still do that on weekends around our hometown.

I'm kind of a mess, so I need an otterbox, but plan to get the slimmer Commuter version though the colors aren't so sophisticated.

You might like this app - http://knowwhatapp.com/

  22. my condolences, man; forsaking the cheap and low is so painful. my biggest consolation to date has been that switching up to a 3G has made the few calls i do make a lot clearer. does that make up for the fact that i tweeted a typo for more or less the first time ever yesterday? probably no, but here we are.

i know what you mean about the camera. it's the devil.

    1. Very true - one of my main grievances with cell phones is that the connection has a time lag and sometimes an echo. This phone doesn't get rid of it completely, but it is way better. That said, I've only actually talked on it once so far. I very much dislike talking on cell phones. Had the hardest time convincing the sales guy that I needed the LOWEST possible plan.

  24. I spent hours looking at the Society 6 cases, especially the typography and abstract categories... I ended up with one fairly similar to the Kate Spade gold stripes, but without the branding issue: http://society6.com/vitalicphoto/Gold-Diag_iPhone-Case

    I kinda love it.

  25. I could not make up my damn mind at Society 6, so I went with a J.Crew case. Love it. 100% satisfied with it. And my super picky, techy, Mac loving bf stamped his approval.

  26. I got the best case for mine from amazon - gold glitter. My friend got the exact same one once she saw mine. I'm picky about cases and don't like any that wrap around the front. This one keeps to the slim, minimalist profile of the iPhone:

    2. Still debating it! I did download the app so I could try it out, but I'm not completely comfortable with it yet. I don't want it to ever replace my camera!

      Delete
    3. I think that if you love taking photos with the real camera that it won't replace it. I still bring my camera with me and the iphone for instagram pics. I take something with the real camera but for quick on the run things like out subway or taxi windows I love using the phone, it's easier to grab in a hurry and then fun to play with. But I still take far more regular camera pics so not to fear!

  29. welcome, friend. i myself had a near-vintage relic from a time close to pre-internet. it was made from recycled plastic so it made me feel--you put it well--smug. but i've crossed over and haven't looked back. now onto the real dilemas: a). i'd say go for society 6. i have an 'uncommon' case but it has a black rim which i didn't realize when i bought it online. ugs. b). when it comes to capturing the perfect coy grin with an iphone. no luck. recoil in horror in terror is right.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the black rim is supposed to provide screen protection, though?

The amount of choices on phone cases is completely bewildering. And then I have a few friends who swear the cases are completely unnecessary and just to let the phone be. How to decide?

      Delete
  30. The camera on the front is not as good as the one on the back so you'll always get a nicer shot if you flip it although it's obviously harder to work out what's in shot if you're taking one of yourself!

  36. I have the CaseMate Tough case and I love it. There are several artist designs to choose from on their website or you can design your own. http://www.case-mate.com/

It is slim, but still feels sturdy. It has two layers - a silicone skin and a hard shell that snaps on top of that. If you're not looking for high protection, their tortoiseshell case is also very cool.

  37. the society6 ones are adorable but beware--i was running with my dog and my phone slipped out of my sweatshirt pocket and onto the sidewalk, the whole screen shattered. i was devastated. i now have a new phone and an otterbox, and while it isn't the most aesthetically pleasing it protects your phone like a tank. i don't recommend it if you keep your phone in your pocket, as it tends to be too bulky. but if you carry around a purse, then i totally recommend it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I echo the recommendations for Society6. They don't have the absolute best protection, but they're perfectly fine as long as you're careful with the phone.

  43. I have the iphone 4 and while I adore the cute cases that are out there, I am terrified to take my phone out of my otterbox case. Honestly, I kind of hate it sometimes because it is bulky and defeats the whole purpose of the sleekness (couldn't think of a better word) of the iphone, but I love it when I see my phone slipping out of my hands and crashing on the cement sidewalk. I have this one:

I really love it (it fits my iphone4 like a glove) and I get compliments all the time. There really isn't much branding to it and to not pay the $40 I joined their e-mailing list and got 15% off.

  51. I'm not sure what type of warranty/apple care you purchased (if any) but as far as a cover, forgo style and focus on function! You don't want the screen on that baby to crack if/when you inevitably drop it. Speck makes a good cover. Whatever one you do chose, make sure the front of the cover has a lip that extends above the screen, so if it lands face-down, you'll be all good!
