Silly and indecisive

Will you indulge me in a completely self centered post today?

I can't decide what to do with my hair.

short-vs.-long

Background - I have very straight hair that I alternately grow out and chop off. I've had it almost as long as my waist and cropped to my earlobes, so I'm not exactly scissors shy. Right now it's in the annoying in between phase and it's starting to drive me nuts.

I've never had bangs, but I'm thinking of going for it. I'd actually prefer the short look but I'm wondering if my hair is too straight to look good in that cut.

Full disclosure: I am also very, very challenged in the styling department. The most I can manage is a haphazard blow dry. I am apparently incapable of holding a brush and the blow dryer at the same time, so I can't do any complicated maneuvers. I have no experience with product, but I'm not averse to it, as long as it takes less than 5 minutes to apply.

Let's take a vote (anonymous, of course).

  1. I'm completely cheating, but I vote both -- my hair texture is more wavy, but I still got the asymmetrical cut that *rocks* on super-straight hair. My stylist called it the Victoria Beckham bob, and I don't want to call it that at all -- but I think he's right :( But it let's me have long AND short, and is *so* easy to style, it's ridiculous. And I don't even have straight hair!

A-hem. Other than that, I'd vote try the bangs (that's actually how I transitioned here from long hair (between my shoulder blades to just above mid-back?)) :) Good luck! (Have FUN!)

  2. I am silly and go for short, it is easier to maintain, but then again, headbands and ponytails are perfectly fine when baking.

  3. I can't vote b/c what I want to vote for isn't an option. I think we might have similar hair and hair related habits.

1)My hair is straight and boring (but pretty damn thick)
2)I can't hold a brush and blow dryer to save my life.

What I want to tell you is that you SHOULD ABSOLUTELY GET BANGS. I never had them before two years ago and now I am obsessed and have convinced various friends and family members to get them also. I don't have straight across, blunt ones though. Mine sweep across the forehead (I call them side sweepers) and they add so much. Once you get them you'll be like "how did I ever live without these!"

In terms of length, side sweepers look good with every length. That is why they are so awesome. Google Images Reese Witherspoon, she has good side sweepers.

Now I feel a little weird for becoming so involved with your hair. Good luck, I am going to go now.

  4. Ugh, I'm debating the same thing, only my hair is curly -- read: frizzy -- and since spring/summer is a-coming, I know it will want to curl and halo no matter what. But I haven't had long locks in a long time ... so it's fun, but looks a little strange on me. Sadly, bangs aren't an option, though I truly wish they were, as my forehead sometimes hogs the camera when a pic is taken.

Short is fun, esp. with bangs. And showing a little neck in the summer is just great. Good luck with your decision!

  5. I think that is clear! Go for short, this is so stylish!

Love your blog, I'm proud that i have discovered it today.

  6. oh goodness. work? or debate coiffures? wahoo, hair it is.

i have long straight hair too, and it's been all sorts of lengths over the past few years. in september i decided to keep it long but shake things up with some bangs. they were so fun....but so impossible...i have a very disagreeable cowlick in the very front of my head and the same hair-dryer/brush problems. no matter how hard i tried to "train" my hair, i couldn't teach an old dog new tricks. darn it.

so...after all that...i vote for long with bangs if cowlicks won't get it your way!

    good luck!

  7. I go for short. I love short hair in the summer where it's out of the way and not making me too hot. It just makes you feel a little lighter and cooler... oh, and go for some bangs! If you've never had bangs, why not try?! It's only hair... it will grow back if you hate it, but you actually may end up loving it! Just my two cents. :)

  8. How about in-between, shoulder-length with a little flip? Easy, fast and forgiving. Just did Mine. Went from long to shoulder and have been happy with the change. I hate time on blow-drying and have no skills-patience in that area. Post the after pics-whatever you end up with!

  9. short! that's my vote.
i think it would be absolutely perfect!
bangs are fun, too. i would just go for it- but not too short, those are the worst, especially for the first time!

i am so with you on the holding a brush & blow dryer thing. i can't manage a curling iron either, apparently. oh well.

  10. I have the exact same problem. I get annoyed in the in between phase when I think I want to grow my hair out, and then just chop it off. I voted short - it's easier and it's instant gratification :)

If you're worried it won't look like the pic you posted, try looking at Reese Witherspoon's recent bob - I took her photo in for my last cut, and my stylist gave me some Bumble & Bumble stuff to keep it piecey with no styling involved.

  11. I voted short! I wish I had hair like the style shown here. Go for it!

  12. go for the bangs {short or long, either is cute!} and SKIP the hairdryer!

  13. short for the summer would be kickin' (think of all the clips and headbands with summer frocks, and it'd look so good with your glasses!) - i think that gets my vote. for most cuts, i think the straightness actually makes things simpler; provided that you get a really really good cut the first time, you should be able to style and go pretty easily. layers and razoring will do most of the work for you.

  14. I actually had a pixie hair cut for almost my whole college life. SHORT SHORT SHORT! And I loved it :) I would definitely recommend bangs if you haven't tried them yet!

  15. long with bangs!! so chic and french

  16. short :) i am also slightly hair styling challenged. and get the adorable undies in the first pic, so friggen cute!!! :)

  17. You guys are awesome! So much good advice.

D was relieved that I posted this, because there is only so much input a boy can give before he wants to kill himself.

  18. i just love that you posted this! i'm getting my hair cut today and just like you i've had every length of hair possible. I also understand about being styling impaired, but i have to recommend an ionic hairdryer. If you don't have one it will change the entire way you feel about your hair. Turn your head upside down, blast with the dryer and then shake it out! also i vote for bangs, they're fun and if you don't like em, easy to grow out or pin back... and for someone who doesn't style her hair at all, i just love bangs cause it's 30 seconds and i look put together.

  19. I voted Long! :) You can do so much more with Long hair. Maybe long hair with layers?! ;)

  20. You absolutely need to get bangs. Our hair is eerily similar and you should go for the bangs. For years as a kid/teen no one would give me bangs because I have a widow's peak; then as an adult I made it happen and it's awesome.

I'm sporting a Posh-like bob as well and it could be my haircut for life. I was thinking about a really strong bang this last time, but chickened out.

  21. Be patient, and let it grow longer. And yes, go with the bangs.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Go short! Get the bangs!

I usually think that if you're asking those questions, it means you should take the plunge, since you're clearly wanting some adventure. Have fun!

Also, I think Bumble & bumble products are great for easy style. I have straight hair, too, and I like Surf Spray for that scrunched look you have in the photos, Brilliantine for ends, Grooming Creme for when I don't want to do any work. And none of it takes longer than five minutes.

Show pictures when you do it! xo

  23. i actually think the short cut would be cuter if her hair was a bit more strait. go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I do the same, let my hair grow out and then chop it off.
Short tends to be more manageable.
But a few months back I did get my hair cut angled so the back was shorter than the front. I found that I actually had to spend more time on my hair otherwise it would stick out in all sorts of strangeness.
At least when its long it hangs down flat and I can just pull it into a pony tail.
Go for the bangs, you can always grow them out if you find you don't like them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I vote long simply because being able to pull your hair back in the summer is SO nice. Also I cut my hair short a year ago and am still growing it out, something I'm very excited about.
But if you have a face that can pull bangs off, go for it.

  26. get bangs ... all of the cool kids are doing it ... and keep it long!

ps - hair dryers are overrated.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Definitely short. With bangs! I'd get bangs myself only it's my husbands sole rule in regards to my appearance. He has a bizarre hatred for them. I thinks they remind him of his mom. ; )

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't have time to read why everyone is voting short

    BUT, I want to say.

Get Bangs. Now! Keep it long.

I am so jealous of long luxurious straight brown hair with bangs. So simple and classic. Do it for me since I can't. And long is much easier to style than short.

Then, after you have known this bliss that I never can, you can try short with bangs.

  29. I'm cutting my hair all off next week! I don't think that hair can ever be too straight for a short cut, maybe too thin, but not too straight. And I think bangs are THE way to go!! They'll grow out fast too, if you happen to not like them (:

Come to my blog and see the cut I'm going for, maybe then you won't be so shy to go with your short style!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Go for a bob, and long, side-swept bangs!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh, I say short! I chopped my chair this winter and although I have straight hair too I LOVE it!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I adore long hair! But that cute is too cute, so I vote for the short!
I have super straight hair and I too have no talents with a brush and blow dryer! I too do not have any knowledge or skill when it comes to "product"! That is why I think bangs are good! I have bangs and it is easy to curl with a big round brush and ryer or go straight and choppy or pin them back. It helps change things up without getting fancy! And it look like you have style! Good Luck!

  33. Rachel I just voted for short (and bangs). Short hair can be not easy to take care of, but cute and sassy. Let us know what you decide. xoxo

    PS What was D's choice?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like short- easy, sassy and it will always grow!

  35. I hear you! It sounds like we have the EXACT same hair issues. I always see photos of both long and short styles where the models have this great body and texture, then I go for the cut and it hangs like a painfully straight curtain around my face.

    I say:
    1. Go for bangs. They're a fun thing to try and if you hate them you can pin them back til they grow out.

    2. Go short. Even if your hair doesn't look like this pic that you've posted, it'll still be super cute with straight hair to have a short bob with bangs.

    That's just my two cents!

  36. This is a very grave topic that deserves special attention. I love the shortish hair cut - and I love bangs. Bangs are the way forward. If you get your hair razored, the layers might wave a bit, creating some body and texture. DO IT (and then post pictures, please)

    ReplyDelete
  37. BANGS! i have similar hair - although mine grows sooo slowly - but after 26 years of the same hair style i took a picture of heidi klum with some badass bangs in and let her chop! I love them, something so different - go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  38. so funny, I cut off my long locks 2 years ago, and now my hair falls softly on my shoulders, and I love it. Hey it will always grew back, go for an in between, medium cut. Good luck!
