In the end, my timing wasn't quite as on as last year. The turkey was just a wee bit late coming out of the oven but I don't think anyone minded. I also ran out of chilled champagne, but I think that correlates directly with the late turkey so I'm just going to call it a single glitch.

D designed our place cards this year with a clever tab system so they fit in the mini candlestick holder on our funny glass turkeys. He thinks they came out a little disco-fever-y but I love them.

I was wiped out for the rest of the weekend but luckily Circe is an excellent companion in inactivity and we borrowed her for the weekend. Her ability to nap for long stretches of time is unrivaled. We took her to Petco (her first time inside a store! - she leads a sheltered life) and allowed her to pick out her own dog toy. I think wandering around an aisle of toys was the most exciting experience in her life to date. I'm not sure it made up for the intense at home grooming session that followed, though.

I'm not one of those people who starts gearing up for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. I generally need about a week to recover and work through my leftovers. But we are having friends over for eggnog later this week and I'm feeling ready to get started.

  1. Your pies! And place cards in turkeys! I kind of love it all.

On a dog related note, Frances knows when we are within three blocks of any dog store and gets so excited about the prospect you feel horribly guilty not going in. Her favorite part, walking around the food aisles and eating the random kibbles on the floor, preferably under the shelving units. Anna is still oblivious to it all.

    1. I love Frances. It's still funny to me to take dogs in stores but I'm on board with Petco, especially since I saw how ridiculously exciting it was for her.

    1. I'm sure she'd be happy to take a little vacation abroad, if only she had a passport!

  6. Goodness, such a lovely table and spread! I love that it's clean yet full of food, all at the same time...my table just ends up looking way too full. One of the things I look forward to when I buy a home is having a large enough entertaining setup so this doesn't happen. I can't wait to have more than four chairs. :)

    1. So much credit goes to finally having the side buffet! D designed it wide for that purpose and then finished the wood with food safe finish so it's perfect for serving from, even if food gets dropped on it. I love it.

    1. New recipe this year! Pecan tart and it has finally convinced me to love it. (I am not a pecan pie fan, oddly)

  10. Ooh, can you share that pecan tart recipe? I don't love pecan pie, either, but I might be open to a pecan tart.

I have sideboard envy again. One of these days, I'll have space and a proper table and some sort of sideboard. And then we can invite more than 2 people over for dinner, haha.

Also - do you make your eggnog? I'm looking for good recipes to try this year (aside from the one in my great-grandma's 1950 edition Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book), and your recommendations are always spot on.

    1. I'm definitely going to share the pecan tart recipe! It was so good - saltier, crunchier and less gooey than regular pecan pie.

I have made eggnog exactly once and it was pretty good although completely different from the storebought stuff. Maybe I'll make the attempt again soon and post the recipe with notes.

  11. Love the table setting! You can never have enough candle holders as far as I'm concerned.

  12. You have beautiful style! Timeless and a bit modern at the same time. Love it. Do you have any idea what that style of candle holders would be called? I'm searching for some but don't have a clue where to find them!

    1. I'm not sure what they candle holders are called, but I think your best bet is searching for "midcentury modern brass candle holders" and variations of those terms. Good luck!

    2. Merci! I didn't think to add "midcentury modern" to my search before.
