Purchases - grooming

I lost the $2 drugstore brush I've had for the last decade over New Year's weekend and spent a few weeks attempting to use D's comb before admitting that I was going to have to buy a replacement.

Luckily Fred Segal was having a big sale so I got this brush + the macadamia nut oil for $7.50. And actually the macadamia nut oil is kind of nice on my super dry winter hair. I'm guessing it's a rip off the morrocan oil everyone is obsessed with?

A decent brush - totally worth buying. Even if it is a little boring.

I also picked up some new night moisturizer for my face + skin moisturizer. I have really dry skin but I don't like body lotion. I finally hit a point where the only thing that sounded appealing was straight up oil, and the Burt's Bees baby oil doesn't have any weird ingredients and it doesn't make you smell like a baby. So far I'm loving both of these. The night moisturizer is super thick, so be warned if you aren't into that.

I still need to figure out if I'm going to bite the bullet and purchase some eye cream. I just get overwhelmed with the number of options out there.

  1. Look at 100% Pure. I'm loving their products lately. Usually I don't like fruit smells, but these have grown on me. I use the cleansers, eye cream, oils, scrubs....pretty much everything but the body stuff. The smell on those is too strong for me.

    1. Thanks, Danielle! I'll check them out. Although I'm a bit leery of fruit scented (or really, almost anything scented - I'm super picky about scents) products. Sometimes they're just right, though.

  3. In my last job, I had to fly a lot so I was always getting dark circles and dry skin around my eyes. I tried Kiehl's Eye Alert (mens product) and it seemed to do the trick. Plus, it's a decent price - this is coming from someone who gets most of her makeup at the grocery store :)

  5. I just ordered (and received today) Mama bee oil and belly butter. Pregnancy + winter = extra itchy dryness.

    1. THANK YOU!!! I went on this morning and ordered a pair. So nice to save that money and I actually don't get the Gilt emails (too much regular temptation) so I never would have known if you didn't give me this heads up.

  8. i reached that point, too- i only use vitamin E oil on my face and body now. besides the dogs wanting to lick me all the time, it feels wonderful and surprisingly absorbs quickly. so much cheaper and longer lasting than the 30.00 moisturizer i was using.

    1. Interesting! Maybe I'll check that out next. I have to admit that the baby oil is a bit pricey for daily use on an adult sized body. : (

I've been alternating with coconut oil, which is pretty great too.

  9. I'm currently obsessed with organic rosehip oil for my face. So luxurious.

That hairbrush looks like an instant head massage. :)

  11. I've never heard of using macademia nut oil, but it sounds like a great natural alternative. Thanks for the tip!

  12. Macadamia oil isn't a rip off of Moroccan (argon) oil, it's just a different type of oil that has properties that are good for your hair. :)

If you're in need of an eye cream but aren't sure which to purchase, I adore the Clinique All About the Eyes Rich. I also hear the Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado is another great one. You could probably get samples of both at counters to try to see if you like them/if they're worth the splurge.

  13. You don't need eye cream. You just need big sunglasses to stop you squinting. I've been a beauty writer for years and I've yet to find a dermatologist (or anyone who's not trying to make me buy eye-cream) who says eye-cream works. I've never used it and I have very few lines around my eyes for being 29. I just massage in rosehip oil gently around my eyes when I do the rest of my face.

    1. I've heard this - my optometrist is always pushing for the most enormous sunglasses possible. I'm covered on this front, luckily. I'm so used to my sunglasses that on the few occasions I forget them I can barely stand to be outside.

I'm more worried about dryness than lines, really. My eye area gets super dry (as does my entire face) and most moisturizers aren't supposed to get too close to your eyes. I'll have to check out the rosehip oil you recommend.

  14. For the first time ever I made a new year's resolution - I resolved to take better care of my skin. At night I use a night cream, rosehip oil (amazing and cheap!) and an eye cream. And I actually take off my make up (shocking that I usually didn't!!). My skin feels so much better. I'm using All About Eyes by Clinique - I'm not always the biggest fan of Clinique but it was reasonably priced and was recommended by an beauty writer. So far, I'm loving it.

    2. I live in Australia so I don't have any US recommendations but I bought mine at a health food shop so I imagine Whole Foods would have it. The brand I use it called A'kin but I've heard that Trilogy is good too. Hope you can track it down somewhere :) :)

  15. thanks for letting me know about the night cream. i love stuff like that but there are so many products out there, so anything helps narrow it down.

  16. about the eye cream: i love burt's bees, and so bought some of theirs when i decided to take the plunge... and it made my eyes watery and blurry (!!) after a few days of use.
i gave up on eye cream.

  17. One of the best things I have found for dry skin (because I'm not in love with body lotion either) is making your own scrub out of olive oil, honey, sugar, and a bit of vanilla extract. You scrub in the shower, rinse off, pat dry, and no need for lotion! I know Lush also makes an in shower cream that you rinse off and it's the same idea.

  19. Funny. When you mentioned the Korres gilt deal recently, I snatched two of them right up and one of my purchases, aside from the mineral foundation, was the night cream. I have used Burts Bees night cream (that very one you bought) for a year or two, and was getting sick of the scent and the heaviness (I think I just need a change every once in a while). I love the Korres, but being that it costs $52, I will probably never splurge on it again. Worth trying a sample at Sephora though.

    1. I was wishing that I'd done this! They sent me a sample with my Korres order and that night cream is pretty heavenly - I used up every last bit. But I had already spent my vouchers and I couldn't bring myself to buy it straight up. Maybe sometime in the future.

  20. Ugh! I totally understand dry and sensitive skin. Gotta love Burt's Bees! Also, philosophy is good. I know you get a lot of comments but a suggestions for winter skin that's also sensitive is ORGANIC honey and ORGANIC coconut oil (gotta get those nutrients)! Rub the honey on your arms or what not for at least 10 minutes. Rinse off. Then slather on the cocnut oil and just let it soak in. You won't need lotion for a good amount of time!

  21. Love recommendations for products! I'm super curious about the rosehip oil now too! Have you heard of the oil cleansing method (OCM)? It's washing your face with a mix of olive oil and castor oil (or jojoba oil and castor oil). I tried it and loved how my skin felt but I think everyday was too much, I started breaking out a tiny bit but I think doing that once or twice a week would be about right. I think simplemom.net wrote about OCM.

I use Jason Age Renewal Vitamin E lotion around my eyes and for night cream, it's super thick and rich.

  22. Nice! I just hate it when my hands feel slimy, whether from oil or moisturizer, so I can be really bad about moisturizing. Burts Bees has an eye cream (I think it's part of the Radiance line?) that works well and it's a great price.

  23. I have super dry skin too and use straight oil over my whole body every time I have a shower otherwise I'm a scaly monster. I use jojoba oil, aparently it is like plant sebum, the closest thing to our natural skin oils. I don't know, but it works well for me. I also use it as make up remover and face cleanser. I love being able to use one product for multiple things. Sometimes finding an effective deodorant is hard, I've been using a drop of sandalwood oil under each arm and it works really well, and I tend to sweat a lot.

    1. So interesting! It's crazy that you can use oil as an eye makeup remover. I have a slight mascara addiction, so it's critical that I have a face wash that really does get all that junk off.

  24. if you find a great eye cream, let us know. i am still searching for one that is highly reviewed and not $100+! for facewash, you need to check out the purity cleansing oil by philosophy. i'm now obsessed with using oil to wash my face. sounds counter-intuitive but it is amazing... has done wonders with my dry winter skin.

  25. I've always been curious about that macadamia nut oil! I've seen it before while shopping but questioned how great it is. I'm currently using coconut oil for my hair this winter but now I may just have to try this as well!

  27. I like The Body Shop's Nutriganics eye cream ( http://www.thebodyshop-usa.com/skin-care/face-eye-treatments/nutriganics-smoothing-eye-cream.aspx ). It really helps with dark circle and puffiness, its not too expensive, and you only need a little bit so it lasts a long time.
