{breakfast}
As easy as it sounds. I take half a large avocado and use a fork to mash it up on one slice of perfectly toasted bread. Sprinkle with sea salt. Repeat for the next several weeks.

I wish I could tell you what kind of avocados we have, because I'm convinced they're the most delicious ones in the world. The tree is on my parents' property, a vestige of the old fruit farms. It's some kind of hybrid - definitely part Fuerte, which used to be the standard around here before the Hass took over.
p.s. awesome pictures + history for the california avocado afficionado here
the very best bagel i ever had, at notes from underground on van ness in sf, had a bit of cream cheese, sun dried tomatoes with just a wee bit of accompanying oil, avocado, and sea salt. i think of you often, heart-stopping bagel.
ReplyDeleteAs a Cali girl born and raised, I was never actually a fan of avocados until this year, but boy did I develop an addiction to avos on toast. (and now I'm an East Coaster...)
ReplyDeleteI've been doing the exact same thing for breakfasts as well! And an easy way to make it a January dinner as well (http://grapevinetwine.tumblr.com/post/2657276688).
ReplyDeleteMy most favorite breakfast in the world. A friend's dad introduced my to the loveliness that is avocado on toast in my teens and I have never looked back. Fortunately I now live in Mexico where avocados are under 50 cents a kilo as opposed to the 2 for $3 that they commonly are in my native Canada.
ReplyDeleteSo simple and so yummy...I'm an east coaster jealous that you have an avocado tree on the ready!
ReplyDeleteHells to the yes, avocado toast; it's been my January go-to. Except that I put cheese on mine, too, it being January and all.
ReplyDeletewhat a simple and delicious idea. something similar caught my eye this morning and i posted it as the 'daily distraction' on our blog! great minds thing alike...
ReplyDeleteyes, my breakfast too! though i'm enjoying today's blizzard here in boston very much, i dream of living in a place where distinguishing between varieties of avocado in january would even be a consideration. one day i WILL grow them in my yard!
ReplyDeleteyup. those and oatmeal scones have been on rotation for weeks now.
ReplyDeletei remember learning how to grow an avocado tree in germany, when i was (not much) younger. i'd love to grow one here, but i don't seem to have the patience with my avocado stones.
Finding good avocados on the east coast is really quite difficult. And when you do, they are far too expensive. That having been said, enough people are talking about avocado toast with enough enthusiasm, I think I might just have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteThis looks really tasty, and is the sort of thing I'd do. I'd add powdered coriander and chili paste though! =) I've done that for lunch.
ReplyDeleteAbbieBabble, I also have trouble finding good avocados here on the east coast, but I find it varies seasonally. I stopped buying them in the fall after buying a series of ones that turned brown before getting fully soft.
I especially like avocado with black tea and I could see having this breakfast with a bold black tea.
i would send you mine - it is one of those foods that i should like, but i don't.
ReplyDeleteThat is a perfect breakfast.
ReplyDeleteThis has been my breakfast this past week too. My brother's avocado tree is bursting right now. We've been slipping any leftover fruit into our smoothies. Mmm.
ReplyDeleteoooo I love avocados so much! This breakfast sounds perfect! I am pretty jealous of your avocado tree connections, btw.
ReplyDeleteI had this for an afternoon snack today at work. Simple and delicious. xo.
ReplyDeleteyum. i haven't had avocado in some time, and i could really go for one after reading this.
ReplyDeleteI love avocados and eat them just like you do. We don't get really good ones here in NY.
ReplyDeleteoh my, what a simply delicious suggestion! am sure that i will become hooked on this.
ReplyDelete@ lauren - I believe I will add some sundried tomatoes to my avocado toast tomorrow. Thank you.
ReplyDelete@ Julia - the egg in a hole + avocado looks amazing! Adding it to the list.
@ Alex - I like your thinking - every breakfast I eat is served with black tea! I'm not sure how else I would get my day started.
Yum! I think avocados should have their own food group. So delicious.
ReplyDeletei don't eat much avocado...it's a treat for me...so you are lucky to have a local source!
ReplyDeleteThis is my absolute favorite thing to eat for breakfast. Yet another thing we have in common. :)
ReplyDeletethis looks delicious! i'm going to have to stop by the store for avocados on the way home tonight!
ReplyDeleteI'm very jealous that you have an avocado tree! I love avocados, I crave guacamole. I'll have to try them on toast. I like to slice them on saltines with a squeeze of lemon juice. It's one of my favorite snacks. Thanks!
ReplyDelete"Def part Fuerte, which used to the standard around here before the Haas took over."
ReplyDeleteSounds like the opening line to "Westside Story II: the Truth about the Avocados"
This recipe is even better if you sprinkle lemon juice and ground pepper on the avocado.. or even, if you feel indulgent, mix in a little bit of mayo.
ReplyDeleteLove avocado toast or avocados on anything!!! :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE! this is a favorite snack of mine as well - i usually just finish it off with thick slice of tomato and a squeeze of lime, delish!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely love your blog. keep up the great work and please come visit if you have ever have time!
I stumbled upon your blog and then couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you made avocado toast. I am a born and raised California girl and avocado toast with a sprinkle of salt is like water in my house.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who does this! I make it the easiest way possible and simply take the back of a spoon to scrape it out and schmear it on the toast.
ReplyDeletei do the exact same thing... breakfast at least twice a week (since there are always two halves!) ... but i add sriracha hot sauce :)
ReplyDeletemy absolute favorite!! :) isn't it just the best??! yes! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my FAAAVOURITE things to eat! Avo toast is SO delicious, and definitely a meal in itself :D
