Weekend + no shopping update - week 10

Can you believe it's week 10 already? Two more weeks to go.

I cruised through last week and then temptation snuck up on me, during a quick trip to the bike shop. $500 worth of temptation (but on sale from $600!).

I wish this picture did the bike justice, but it doesn't come close. The bike is glossy, of course. But it has the sweetest retro leather saddle (by Bontrager!) and leather covered handles. The lines are beautiful and in person it is very, very hard to resist running your hands over it covetously (luckily people in bike shops are used to this sort of behavior, and no one thinks you are crazy).

I didn't cave, but it was shockingly tempting. I have the sweetest yellow 1972 Schwinn and I am still too terrified to take it out in LA. So I definitely neither need nor deserve something this deluxe. But still.

So I guess that's just me. I resisted a $60 dress last week and then almost impulse purchased a $500 bike. Baby steps.

  1. Haha, I know what you mean! I have a bike store that is three blocks from my house with the Simple City in cream with the basket in front. (They even installed a cupholder!) I think it might be the 8-speed though because they have it on sale at $775.

Sometimes when I walk by it (every, single, day) I like to day dream about that whole "law of attraction" thing and wonder how it will end up being mine.

    Any ideas?

  3. dude, even i'm tempted by that bike, and i wouldn't last five minutes with it here! surely the fates want you to have it, since it coordinates so nicely with your salt and pepper shakers. if you ever want to start an LA girls' biker gang, look my little sis up - like you, she's been wanting to take a spin around town for a while.

  5. Oh, that bike is so dreamy! You are one strong woman to have been able to resist its lure! I've just begun a no-shopping 'spree' myself - temptation lurks EVERYWHERE!

  7. With the awakening of spring and a Robin's egg blue bike- you are doing well to resist. JC mentioned a cup holder..... now that piques my interest!

  16. Wow - that's a tough one. A bike can almost feel like an ethical purchase, since it's good for your health and the environment!

  18. ha! that's too funny. i'm really pretty ok at managing temptation when it's the expensive kind - it's the under-$50 incarnation that's tough.

  21. I'm impressed.

I feel like just hearing about your and others' experiences with the spending hiatus counts as my own participation in it. Hmmm ... I'm sure my logic's a little screwy, but it's total torture seeing all the wonderful things you (and the others) are so piously passing up. I feel like we should all eat cookies together once this hiatus is over!

  24. ten weeks no shopping, that is amazing you are doing so well. I know I'd cave after...hmm a day. But i think it is such a good idea the world is so consumerist these days. Beautiful bike by the way, you did well to resist that.
