I finally managed to get some photos of the headband process. You need a lightweight fabric. I highly recommend thin china silk, which is what I used for Rena's birthday headband, but for the tutorial I used this very light cotton/linen blend and it was lovely as well.
The tutorial is all photos, so let me know if you have any questions.
UPDATES: Good questions have been asked & here are some answers - you need very little fabric, probably less than 1/8 of a yard. The squares shown here were about 2", but that's flexible. Any size will work and I wasn't particularly fussy about making them all the same size. Variation is nice. I think I made about 10 blooms for this particular headband, which means I needed 20 squares. The blooms are pretty tightly packed. You could use fewer blooms for a looser effect.
And voila...
P.S. The edges are left unfinished, which means you can't just toss it in the washer without the risk of serious unraveling. But it's a headband, after all, so hopefully it won't need heavy duty cleaning.
P.P.S. The reason the tutorial tells you to start in the center of the length of ribbon and work in one direction is because you want to wear it over to one side. Trust me. Putting the pouf directly on the top of you head makes you look like you are sprouting a very unlikely growth. Don't do it.
P.P.S. Just for fun I tried holding it up to my waist and I fell in love. Next time, I'm making a skinny belt. Stay tuned.

I LOVE this idea... totally going to make the belt! Not sure if I could look as cute as you with the headband, but I am going to give that a try too. I LOVE your blog, btw, and check it nearly every day. Thanks for posting such beautiful pictures and inspiring ideas!
ReplyDeletewhat a fabulous tutorial...that light color looks great against your hair, but i can just as easily imagine a cotton candy pink!
ReplyDeleteand, might i add, an adorable self-portrait.
ReplyDelete*love* this! The pics are fab (as is, duh, the headband)! And for sure, I am doing this for my own handmade flower sash -- seems like they're all the rage now. Whoo!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial. This looks great~!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the tutorial! This is going straight into my DIY xmas gifts folder ;)
ReplyDeleteWonderfully easy to follow tutorial! More please:)
ReplyDeleteI love this. It looks great and the step by step is wonderfully laid out and easily explained. We want more!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this...what a great little project involving thread & fabric that I think even I can handle! Love the belt idea too.
ReplyDeleteLove it. I need to start crafting. Mostly just make everything you make.
ReplyDeleteLove it. You look so cute in it too.
ReplyDeletewow, i'm totally sharing this on my blog...and making one too...or two or three. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are such a clever delight! Must say, I adore this headband and can't wait to see the skinny belt!
ReplyDeleteyay. making this today. I have a perfect bag filled with small misc. bits of silk.

Cute, cute headband, and it looks awesome on you! I have a couple of questions:
ReplyDelete(1) How much fabric did you need (doesn't look like much, but wondering)
(2) Did you keep it folded up when you cut the squares?
(3)How many squares did you need to make the one you are wearing?
WOW!!! This is GORGEOUS! I can't wait to make one-or twenty!-of these! I'll be linking as well.
ReplyDeleteLove. I may try to make one. This weekend, even. Yellow feels summery right now, so I think I may try to find a nice yellow fabric.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial! I wish I was even 1/8 as crafty as you are, haha. =]
Thanks, guys!
ReplyDeleteAmy, good questions! I should have addressed those issues.
1. You need very little fabric - maybe an 1/8 of a yard? I was able to make 5 headbands with the fabric squares shown in the second picture.
2. I did leave it folded up when I cut it, just to make it faster. My squares are only roughly the same size, definitely not perfect.
3. I think I had 8 or 10 buds total on the headband shown, and each bud uses two squares, so I probably used 20 squares.
Oh, I love this! I am definitely going to try my hand at this ruffled beauty!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial!

I am loving this! How do you think it would look as an embellishment for my dog collars???
ReplyDeleteOh, wow! You make it look so easy. I really have to try this one day--too beautiful not to.
ReplyDeletelove this.....excited about the belt
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea, I Love it. Im so glad I stumbled into your blog. It is full of ideas and beautiful eye candy. Can't wait to visit again, Im off to look around some more. Jamie
ReplyDeleteHow adorable! I have some great fabric scraps just waiting to be turned into this.
ReplyDeleteI do have a question though, roughly what size were your squares? It's just hard for me to tell in the pictures.
Thanks for the great tutorial!
Absolutely adorable! I am definitely linking to this baby!!!
ReplyDeleteSuzanne - I would love to see a dog rocking a ruffled collar! You might need to finish the edges so it's easier to wash.
ReplyDeleteLinnea - I meant to mention this and forgot! Squares are approximately 2", but you can change the size to whatever you want. Bigger squares mean bigger ruffles, so it just depends on what you're looking for.
Beautiful! I think I'll make one for our granddaughter to wear when she is flower girl in our son's wedding.
ReplyDeleteI've never been big on headbands, but this one is adorable!!
ReplyDeleteHow cute!! I'll have to try this.
ReplyDeleteSO cute. and i think perhaps even doable for the sewing-ly challenged? Because it doesn't require a machine and the machine is what gets me. I think i might need to make myself one of these lovelies!
ReplyDeleteThis is GORGEOUS!!! I posted a link to your tutorial on Craft Gossip Sewing:

cute!
ReplyDeletesuch a great idea... I was looking for some cute girly/flirty room decorating ideas. I ended up stitching a couple "headbands" to a pillow (alternating the height of the frills) and got a really cute look. Thanks for the ideas!
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS!!! I absolutely am in love with this headband, so feminine and flirty!!!
ReplyDeleteI've featured them on my site today, and you can grab an "I've been featured" badge if you'd like.
Thanks for sharing!! :)
This one is for the Blair Waldorf in all of us :) We included this on our website! http://fashionableearth.org/blog/2010/04/07/diy-headbands/
ReplyDeleteWow!!! Was referred by Jenni at Family of Four & Get Craftin & what a cool tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing this!!
ReplyDeletesimply stunning :-)
ReplyDeleteWhere can I buy thin china silk? I would love to try this but am not sure where to pick up this particular kind of fabric. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteA good fabric shop will have it. You want to look for a fabric store that is primarily aimed at people who sew clothing, rather than a quilting one. The china silk will be kept with the dress lining fabrics. If you can't find it, you can substitute any thin lining fabric.
DeleteJ ADORE....MERCI
ReplyDeletewoow! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome. I think I'm going to be addicted to making headbands (and belts!).

this is an absolutely gorgeous tutorial! i'm with two girlfriends who are working on this right now!
ReplyDeleteSo, so gorgeous!! I think can actually make this one! I filed this at thecraftersfilebox.com. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOk I'm going to fess up and saying that I a complete sewing dummy!! But I love this and really want to try it. So I'm probably about to ask the stupidest question but here goes...... to make the headband stay on are you knotting it in a bow under your hair or did you sew the two end pieces of the ribbon together to make it a complete circle?
ReplyDeleteYes, I just tie it in a knot at the base of my head. This is mostly because I don't like headbands that are too tight, and this lets me adjust it perfectly. I've also made some where I add a little piece of elastic and do sew the entire thing into a circle.
Deletesuch a great idea! i just finished my first! cant wait to wear it tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this !
ReplyDeleteJust very,very cool! Love it!
ReplyDeleteFabi
This is pretty cute!!!
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled upon this from pinterest. I can't wait to make one for myself!
ReplyDeleteA great way to keep the edges from fraying is Dritz Fray-Check. It costs about 3 dollars and is available at most sewing and crafting stores. You just apply some around the edges and voila!
Hi! What was the width of the ribbon? Because I am thinking about just placing it on elastic!
ReplyDeleteI usually use 3/4" ribbon, but you can easily use 1/2" or even 1". Elastic works great, too!
DeleteI absolutely LOVE this headband, but I was wondering, how do you make it stay on your head? I don't see how a peice of ribbon would work and stay on your head? I"m asking, because I'm going to make this tomorrow. (:
ReplyDeleteI just tie the ribbon snugly and I don't have a problem. But that might just be my head? If you want it to stay in place all day, the easiest thing to do is use a couple of bobby pins. If you place them in an X over the ribbon, they'll keep it in place easily.
DeleteIf a ribbon refuses to stay on your head, you can always modify it a little bit (use elastic instead of ribbon or in place of some of the ribbon). I've even done a couple of these where I attached the ribbon to a headband, for younger children. That works as well. Good luck!
Great tutorial! I would need to take your advice and use something other than ribbon as it would just slide right off (totally an issue with the shape of my head).
ReplyDeleteI included it in my roundup of fabulous and free headband tutorials and you can check it out here: http://darlingadventures.com/?p=470
Love this! Need to sit down and make one, but with something other than ribbon as the base. Headbands tend to slip off my head.
ReplyDeletetruly in love with this i will use for my daughters christening
ReplyDeletewhat are you saying we cant understand that chinese
ReplyDeleteIf you want to be sure that your hair will hold tight, make sure that you are using the right headbands. The Internet is full of places to shop for them but not many are so reliable. http://headbandsonline.com/ is one of the few that I use to shop around and I think that the wholesale prices there are what makes them so good.
