Yesterday we finally returned her and my heart broke in half. Circe has a perfectly good home with my parents but I know it would be easier for them if we could keep her all the time (she is "difficult" with most other dogs and recently decided that she can't tolerate their Irish terrier so they have to keep them separated at all times - dog juggling!) and when she burrows her little face in my leg at night I'd do anything for her. Even seriously consider moving out of our rent controlled, no pets allowed apartment just when the rental market is getting miserably competitive again. For now, we'll all have to survive on visits.
But I mean, really. When I walk out into the living room and find this, what am I supposed to do? You'd start looking at dog friendly listings too, right?
{crafting companions, joined at the hip}
Yeah, we had a "tough" dog who needed to be kept apart from our cats at all times and also had serious separation anxiety and reactivity issues. After an incredibly stressful year of our cats trying to escape to be with us (they're really social, we felt awful they had to be locked away and we could only spend much time with them at night), we were able to place him as a working dog with a wonderful program that gives him the fulfillment he needs. Keeping animals separated is really tough, I feel for your parents. Best of luck with the situation, it's a hard one.
ReplyDeleteOh no, that sounds horrible! I'm glad you were able to find a good place for him and I can't imagine how hard it must have been to give him up.
DeleteCirce has been with this dog since she was a puppy and while they were never good friends, they tolerated each other well enough for years. And then a few years ago they decided they disliked each other, then they wanted nothing to do with each other and will fight to the death if they accidentally get in the same room. My parents can't imagine giving away either dog, since they've been part of the family for years. Sigh.
We bought a house mostly so that we could get a dog and never worry about rent/getting kicked out. Even after being woken up at 4am this morning with a pup-emergency, I wouldn't trade our dog, Olive, for anything. She's family (like yours).
ReplyDeleteYes, if we had a house and a yard, it would be so much easier! We'd do it if there was any way to swing it. I'm trying to hold off on moving until we can possibly purchase a house, but that's so far off that I'm not sure we'll hold out.
DeleteI know. It's unfortunate for others, but we got majorly lucky that the housing market crashed right around when we got married. Otherwise, the neighborhood (actually all neighborhoods around) where we live would have been off the table. If any of your family dogs want to come live in Ventura, just let us know! Olive is very agreeable, and we're looking for a 2nd. Lots of beach/park/running/camping!
Deletewhat a sweet face. A part time dog is better than no dog in my opinion!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh - what a sweetheart! hope she's able to visit a lot.
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to know is - what are you guys making/spelling with so many Bs?
ReplyDeleteHa! We're making some decorations for a baby shower and it happens to be particularly heavy on Bs. I'll show the finished product next week!
DeleteI thought they were masks!
DeleteI don't know what part of LA you're in but my sister is in a dog friendly block in Hollywood and used to have one in Santa Monica. You know, just in case...
ReplyDeleteI might need this information at some point ...
DeleteI'm in serious Circe withdrawal this week.
Well, if it carries on, tweet me @DeeEffCee :)
Deleteawww... what a sweetie Circe is. <3
ReplyDeleteps. I love that your comfort read is HP. That is SO cool :P
UGH! I know. Our new pup is living in total hiding in our no-dogs-allowed apartment building. It's like hiding a fugitive. A plumber came, and we hid in the bedroom for three hours!
ReplyDeleteBut, he's so sweet...
Oh god! I'm not sure how you manage that! When we have Circe one of us has to take her to work everyday and we basically avoid ever leaving her alone in the apartment, in case she barks and we get found out. Luckily, we can fold down our backseats and put a comforter in the back of the car so she essentially has her own large nesting area. She's extremely content hanging out there if we have a dinner or something we need to go to (but obviously we can't go anywhere during the day where we can't bring her in, because it's too hot for her to hang out in the car during the day).
DeleteWe are crazy dog people, I guess.
I love reading your blog but rarely comment. The Circe pictures brought me out of the woodwork. So sweet! I keep staring at the "Sunday work" shot.
ReplyDeleteI too want a pet, but settle for keeping my succulents happy.
Awwww ... thanks for reading, Abby!
DeleteI always feel like a house isn't a home without a dog in it. So I completely understand this. My parents lost our family airedale last spring to old age, and my sister also has a wire-fox terrier named Olive. My parents keep her on the weekends for a "spend the night party."
ReplyDeletexo,
Naurnie
Same boat, Naurns! I've always, always had at least one dog at home, except for the last 7 years in LA. It bums me out so much.
DeleteD, on the other hand, has never had a dog before Circe, so it's really cute to see how blindsided he is by his first dog love. He and Circe have a mutual obsession going on. I love it.
We're actually quite lucky that you're not legally allowed to prohibit animals in an apartment in Ontario. Not sure what we would do without our dog. Best not to think about it!
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking about this! You can't legally prohibit children and if D and I had a kid it would FOR SURE be messier and louder than Circe. Not that I'm going to start being one of those people who argues that their dog should be allowed all the same rights as a human child, but it just strikes me as funny. An older dog ranks pretty damn low on the list of apartment annoyances, so I'm not sure why it's so hard to find a pet friendly building around here.
DeleteJealous of your Ontario rules (and, you know, healthcare and such).
Had a rough week and I kid you not, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, wine and cheese on my bedstand as I'm reading this post.
ReplyDeleteoh no! i thought she and snowy were BFF! (or is this not snowy?)
ReplyDeleteShe and Snowy are still good! It's Mc, the seldom mentioned Irish terrier, who she despises. They were okay together as puppies but apparently that's all off the table now and they want to rip each other apart. It is a really sucky pet situation, because we'd never consider re-homing either one, at least not outside our immediate family. Until we can take Circe or my sis can take Mc, we have a lot of shuffling in the house.
Deletei'm so sorry to hear that. i used to be skeptical of permanent household pet strife, but my college roommate and her husband have had to keep their cats apart with a baby gate for the past 4-odd years. if only you guys could take circe! can she be grandfathered in because she's spiritually yours already?
Deletewe miss you around here, wishing you a great day and hoping for a new post soon :)
