Handsome Coffee

Everyone in Los Angeles has already been to Handsome but I didn't see why that should stop me.

We've been testing out different espresso bean options over the last several months. D and I splurge on beans because we figure we save so much by not buying coffee out that we deserve to treat ourselves.

We tasted both the Dandy and the Dapper. D settled on the Dandy for now. They don't carry a decaf espresso, so I'm still sticking with my Intelligentsia for the time being. Still can't handle daily caffeine. Bummer.

  1. Have you noticed a huge improvement from giving up caffeine? If I remember correctly you gave it up to lessen anxiety. I'm thinking of giving it up for the same reason.

    1. Yes, it's made a huge difference for me! I was drinking a fair amount of caffeine before giving it up just over two years ago and I was waking up with pretty bad anxiety, which for me is really a sign that it's gone too far. I'm used to anxiety during the day but waking up with it is intensely unpleasant.

Cutting out the caffeine doesn't solve all my anxiety problems, but it definitely helps! I've tested out smaller amounts of caffeine. I can handle a cup or two of regular coffee per week without a noticeable difference, but if I have a cup of coffee a few days in a row it starts ramping up again quickly.

During December I had a cup of black tea every morning (because I didn't want to give up my Christmas tea tradition) and that seemed okay but it was better when I got back to more sporadic use.

My current best practice is to avoid caffeine altogether and only make exceptions for sporadic occasions, like a trip to a new coffee place or a meal at a friend's house where they don't have decaf.

I'd definitely say to try it - if you're going to see a difference, I think you'll see it within the first few weeks. I felt MUCH better within a month. If it doesn't help, you can always go back!

    2. Oh, and I have one Coke Zero a week. Yes, I know it's disgusting and terrible for me AND has caffeine but I love it.

  2. Looks so good! I wish we had more coffee shops like these in my city!

  3. I have got to get my hands on some Handsome. There's a place here in San Antonio that sometimes carries Intelligentsia or Counter Culture or Cuvee and always has MadCap (they partnered with MadCap for their signature roast), but I'm dying to see what the fuss is about with Handsome.

  4. love making a good cup of coffee at home, but having it out is one of my favorite simple pleasures. and i've had handsome at events but haven't been in to visit... so you're not the last person to go there. ;-)

  5. I have heard so much about Handsome too- I have almost gone there say 5 times lol! I live in Pasadena, and I am a HUGE fan of Jones coffee. If you are out in these parts it is worth a try!

  6. I recently moved from the Los Angeles area, but while there, I was also restricted to decaffeinated coffee for similar reasons. Married to an avid coffee enthusiast and related to a roaster, I've tried many of the smaller coffee houses as well as more renown coffees. Intelligentsia Black Cat decaf is tied for first with Rose Park Roasters. We lived in Long Beach, and the coffee was delivered to our door by bike -not sure where you live, but this touch sealed the deal and we were almost exclusive Rose Park patrons.

    1. Oooh - thanks for the decaf tip! I'm going to try Rose Park next. My sister lives in Long Beach, so I could stop through next time I'm there.

  7. I'm in love with coffee. I might try this one day.
