Lately

This could more accurately be called things we have eaten lately because I haven't been hauling my camera around as much. We're still getting used to each other although I think D just discovered how to change the focus settings and I think our relationship (with the camera) is going to improve dramatically. Stay tuned.

We haven't been keeping bread in the house much lately, which just makes the occasional grilled cheese sandwich that much better. Topped with avocados from the tree, which are particularly good this year.

D traded some of our avos for a Meyer lemon supply and we've been reveling in them. Meyer lemon juice and tamarind simple syrup cocktails. So good.

We had a family birthday party on Saturday, which justified a little bit of baking. I hadn't baked anything since the holidays, so it was nice to get back in the kitchen again. I made Deb's caramel brownies and her Meyer lemon tart. I overcooked the caramel like crazy so it was a danger to everyone's dental work but still delicious.

  2. Hello! I've followed you for a while, but this is the first time I've been inspired to comment. I was just drooling over those salted caramel brownies on smitten kitchen earlier today. And tonight I'm making the braised cabbage you posted a while ago (for the second time). Melt-in-your-mouth delicious!

  3. Part of blogging that I find particularly interesting is sharing stories about the differences about where we each live. The fact that you have an avocado tree is one of those things. That is really neat. Any avocado we eat here has been brought in from far away so it would be so cool to have your own tree. Not to mention being able to trade some for lemons!

  8. I am so jealous that you not only have an avocado tree, but that you can trade with your neighbors for some lemons. Part of me wants to move to the west coast so I can live like that.

  13. I'm glad I saved reading this post until a Friday because oh does it make me ready for the weekend. Looks like you had a nice few days and I think I may just need to buy some doughnuts, make some brownies and grilled cheese.

  14. I cannot express how jealous I am of your avocado tree (they're usually crazy expensive here in the east) and the fact that you can trade those avocados for Meyer lemons. Enjoy them extra for those of us less fortunate :)
