The weekend, briefly

We cooked a bit on Saturday and then had a leisurely meal with friends. Warm weather and good margaritas. Basically perfect.

We walked and walked on Sunday, stopping for our favorite coffee in the neighborhood and peeking in to see what farmshop is doing (answer - lots of good things that involve food. We need to get back for a meal and some serious shopping).

Messing around with Instagram, as you can see here. So far, my verdict is that it's handy, particularly for times when lugging my camera around doesn't appeal (six mile walks being a case in point).

  1. Oooh, look at all that cheese! Mmmm :)

I agree with your Instagram verdict. My thoughts exactly.

  2. I'm headed to LA this weekend- will have to put farmshop on my list! Is it a store as well?

    1. Yep, it's half restaurant, half market. We didn't eat there (although I've heard it's awesome but a bit pricey) but the food selection is really nicely curated. Lots of fun local options from small companies.

  3. Have you tried Camera + - I use that + find it's more like an SLR lens. But then I've started uploading those pics into Instagram. It took me quite a while to realise that when I hit 'done' on Instagram it was sharing the pics - I thought it was only if I tweeted them. But no...

    1. I haven't, but I'll look it up! Ha - the automatic sharing thing was a little weird for me, but I guess it is the point of the whole thing, right? I'm still getting used to that and kind of wish there were a private option.

    2. You can always delete the photo right after you've taken it. I occassionally use the filters on avatars and I don't want to look self-involved (ha!) so I delete those right after ;)

    3. You can make your Instagram account private. Lots of people use it that way. And, another vote for Camera + ... the filters are WAY better than those in IG.

    5. also, the VSCO app has some great options! i haven't had a chance to use it much, but it has way more options than instagram.

    1. Oh, only the last two! I should have made that more clear. The first two are from my Nikon.

    1. Wish I could tell you! Lots of the coffee shops do it, so I imagine it isn't too hard. I think they use a toothpick in the foam?

  8. Is that a iPad in the top photo? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how well you like cooking with it. Maybe a topic for a blog post!

    1. It is an iPad! I've had it for a few months but haven't really talked about it, I guess. I'm a little torn - it's so handy and I love having it for checking email, looking up recipes, taking it with me if I'm going to be somewhere without my computer all day.

However, I'm reluctant to full heartedly recommend it because I didn't purchase it! It was work-issued and while I love having it, I don't think I would buy one if I had to pay for it. So pricey, doesn't fully replace a computer.

I guess my bottom line is that it's a fun toy, but I probably wouldn't be comfortable spending the money on it.

  9. Hi Rachel,

Just wanted to chime in as a regular reader who appreciates your blog and your photography. I think what makes your blog special, to me at least, is that you're able to capture little moments in life with your DSLR and sort of make ordinary moments magical and captivating. I appreciate that, and it is what I look forward when I visit your space. The same can be accomplished with Instagram, but it doesn't have the same effect.

I have insta as well, and agree that it's much more practical and easier. But I hope instagram doesn't totally replace your weekend updates with your dslr photos on your blog.

    2. Awwww ... thanks, Evelyn! And no worries - I have no intention of letting too much instagram creep up on the blog. I think the camera phone pictures will pop up when it was most convenient, but I love my Nikon too much to ever let it become second fiddle.

Trying captchas this time - better or worse than having to log in to comment? Let me know! Sorry for all the hoops but the spam has been terrible lately!
