Purchase - Clarisonic Mia

*I have a few of these posts backed up and just need to finalize them and get them up - I was holding off on this one until I'd had a chance to use it for a little while*

I have been contemplating the Clarisonic Mia for so long and my post-winter skin finally convinced me to give in. It's a big upfront cost, but D and I are sharing it (the heads are removable, so this isn't gross).

I've had it for a few weeks now and I can say that while we both really like it, I wouldn't call it life changing. I think this may vary person to person. My skin was already decent, just dry. My skin definitely feels smoother, but I haven't noticed that it looks much different.

It does make washing my face much more pleasant. I'd liken it to my electric toothbrush that I've been obsessed with for years. It definitely does a better job than I do on my own and it makes it more enjoyable. As long as the Mia lasts for several years, I'll consider it money well spent.

And maybe after a full month of use my skin will suddenly become transcendent? I still hold out hope.

ETA: I also got these deep pore brushes to go with it. The Mia only comes with one brush and I needed two so that D and I could share. I like the deep pore brushes better than the standard ones, so I'm glad I went with them after reading the reviews.

  1. I bought one and ended up returning it. Like you said, it makes washing up a little more fun and it's a fine tool, but it certainly didn't change my life or anything (unlike the hype surrounding it).

    1. I considered returning it as well, but it ended up with both of us enjoying it enough that we kept it.

I do wonder if some people just have very different results? I read a ton of reviews before I pulled the trigger and most of them were glowing.

  2. Okay, I'm kinda glad to hear this. I've had the Mia in my amazon cart for ages but haven't actually purchased it yet. I am curious, but I'll see if I get it as a gift :) Now, let's talk about that electric toothbrush of yours - what brand/model? I'm curious as we've been eyeing one too!

    1. I have been using an Oral-B electric toothbrush by Braun for well over a decade! It's really been great. I tend to have issues with gum recession (ugh - caused by an over enthusiastic orthodontist) and using the electric toothbrush makes a huge difference. If I travel with a regular one for a few days I can really feel how much harder it is on my gums.

My particular model isn't for sale anymore, but they usually sell the most current one at Costco (as well as everywhere else, of course).

      I looooove my toothbrush, unequivocally.

    2. I have been using the same electric toothbrush for 6 years, and I do agree with you. It is fabulous! I am not planning on buying Clarisonic Mia, because I simply do not believe that an electronic brush can improve my skin. ::sceptic:: :)))

    3. I too have had trouble with my gums, but ever since I started using an oral b electric they have been fine. I like this one, and it's on sale on overstock:

I never even thought of using an electric face wash tool, I just use toner on a cotton round after washing and it gets everything I missed.

    4. Ha! I'm enjoying all this Oral-B love. It really is the best.

  3. How did D's skin turn out after using it for a while? Same results?

    1. Yep, about the same. I just checked with him and he says his skin seems softer but no other big difference. Although he did re-iterate that he likes using it a lot. I'll be curious to see how it works for him long term because he tends to have a little more trouble with his skin getting dry and I think this might help.

  4. I've had one since they came out and like it. You'll notice it's utility more if you use an anti aging serum, as I think it penetrates better, and I would recommend getting a more heavy-duty brush head then the one it's packaged with. I have the deep-pore one and since I'm pregnant and can't use salicylic acid-based items for the duration and was breaking out, this cleared everything up nicely.

    1. Thanks for the recommendation! It does seem like my moisturizer absorbs better. When I can stomach the cost, I think I'll buy myself some of the Korres night moisturizer. I had a sample once that was amazing.

I did get us the deep pore brushes (should have made that clear in the post) and I like them a lot better than the brush that came with the Mia.

I haven't had much trouble with breakouts since using it, but I tend to have pretty sporadic breakouts anyways, so I'll need to see if it reduces them long term.

  5. I've had my Mia for about 9 months now. I use the sensitive brushes because I have sensitive skin. Although my skin is clear and even, using this tool seems to make the pores smaller and cleaner. I notice that the moisturizers and serums I use seem to penetrate the skin better. I did not like the sample cleanser that came with the product; it was too drying. This winter, I've just used the Mia at night to remove makeup. Bottom line: I love the Clarisonic.

  6. I love these posts. I too just bought a Clarisonic and I think my skin is "better" but that might just be because I wash it more/longer with the Mia? I'm glad you like it.

  7. Thanks for the tips/review, I've been on the fence w/the Clarisonic for months now.

  8. I purchased a Clarisonic recently and I'm in the "life changing" camp, I emailed my sisters after the first day and urged both of them to get one too. I haven't purchased replacement brushes yet, they're so expensive I'm dreading it.

  9. I love my Clarisonic brush. I have had it for 6 years. Seriously. Lasts forever. I also use the Deep Cleansing brushes and they don't seem to work THAT much differently then the normal ones. I did find that my usual 'Dermalogica' wash dried my face out when used with the Clarisonic so I just use plain old reliable Cetaphil face wash and that makes my face feel silky smooth.

A few weeks after using it, friends and I noticed a difference in my complexion and when used regularly to this day I notice that my face looks better. Probably because I can clean it better and get off all the makeup. Definitely a MUST-BUY!

    1. OH and to get around the expensive brush replacements, I ALWAYS put them on my Christmas list. My mom will usually buy me 3 or 4 of them and that lasts me through the year :)

    2. Smart! I'll add them to my Amazon list because I'm sure they would be good stocking stuffers. My mom loves getting us toiletry stuff too.

  10. I've been using mine for about a year, and I have to say it's definitely helped me with getting rid of old scarring/dark spots from past breakouts. I hate the cleanser it comes with though, I splurge and use Aveda's Enbrightenment cleanser, feels so good! I'll have to give the deep pore heads a try!

    1. Maybe I'll look into the Aveda face wash! I'm almost out of my Philosophy face wash and it's about time to re-up.

    2. Ohh, if you're talking about Philosophy's Purity I would encourage you not to jump ship. I have sometimes felt restless and wondered if some other cleanser has magically eclipsed it, and the answer has always been no. I crawl guiltily back to the Purity every time!

  11. I am truly glad I found your blog as I've been on the fence about purchasing the Clarisonic! I think I will purchase the Mia and skip the Mia 2 since they pretty much sound like they work the same. Can you post your results in a couple months on how well your skin is adapting to the new change in skin regime?!?! Thanks again!

  15. OK, so I eyed the Clarisonic brush for a while but honestly couldn't stomach the idea of spending so much money on something that may not work (my skin is ornery). So bought the Olay knock off instead and so far it's been pretty good. My pores are definitely smaller and my skin is smoother. I think I would splurge for the large Clarisonic brush for my body cause I love body scrubs.

  16. I love this review!!! I have been contemplating getting one forever since they are all the rave, but I always wondered how much it could really do!!! i think i will save my money and just stick with my Orlay (cheep version) then :)

    thanks,

    love K

  18. This is good to know. I have tried everything from Burts Bees but way to oily. I’ve tried every product too at whole foods almost. I do the at home facial with the Riiviva Microdermabrasion tool for my acne scarring and it’s terrific. Its here at http://www.riiviva.com.
Do you have any recommendations as to what avenue to take for mositurizing with out all the oily residue that happens when I use oils. Thanks

    1. I'm probably not your best option! I have incredibly dry skin, so I go for pretty thick moisturizers. The Burts Bees stuff works great for my skin. Wish I could help - sorry!
