On obsessing

How often have you been to a wedding and thought yeah, that was amazing and it would have been absolutely perfect if only the bride had bothered to tone her arms up a leeeeetle bit more ?

Yeah, me neither. So why did I sign myself up for a month at Pure Barre for an exorbitant cost last week?

People, I know I'm the only one who cares about my arms. Rationally. It's the irrational part that gets me every time. I am sore everywhere.

  1. lady, i TOTALLY SIGNED UP for pure barre when i was engaged. it didn't do anything except for make my butt really muscular. it's really not worth paying all that money. but i completely understand. good luck! you'll be gorgeous no matter WHAT.

  2. I hear you. I think we are getting married the same weekend and I am constantly battling with myself over obsessing over my weight. I mean, I'm on the thin side as it is and it is not like people are really going to notice the difference between a size. People are going to take in my whole appearance and say "gosh, Rowan looked beautiful!" or "gosh, Rowan looked manic and stressed!" I can only hope it is the former.

I feel like it is a little bit of the WIC that has burrowed into our psyches. And it's working, you spent extra money... I for one spent money on tanning. I am pretty pale (redhead) and my dress is really white. I know it is bad for me but I'm doing it anyway. Although I put SPF 50 on my face before I go. Seems counter intuitive but really it is the same level of vanity -- I don't want to look translucent and I don't want wrinkles.

  3. You're kind of my ambition hero. I think if it's important to you, then you should do it...just don't run yourself COMPLETELY ragged before the wedding, because that is no good at all.

  4. A wedding is a great deadline and motivation! I said for years I was going to loose 15 lbs and I finally did it the months leading up to my wedding. I felt beautiful on my wedding day and in a bikini for my honeymoon and do not regret all the pain/stress I went through to get there! I say keep at it!

  6. @ Naurnie - if it actually makes my butt more muscular, I'll totally consider it worth the cost! You can't put a price on a great ass, even if no one will be able to see it under my wedding dress.

  7. ha! oh man, what a great post. slather some tiger balm and know that you will look fabulous.

so true: you can't put a price on a great ass! good luck.

  8. I'd look at the stress relief of exercise as more important than the arms part of it (though the improvement of either I would call an added bonus).

  9. It's quite funny. For all the talk of "must lose weight before the wedding", I lost a lot of weight *after* the wedding...I think because I had time to work out. Basically, my wedding photos are kind of my 'before' pictures. They're pretty, but I'm also 40 pounds heavier in them. So, there's that.

  11. I have to admit it; I'm obsessing too! Have been running, calorie counting and pilates'ng in a determined fashion. Going to have to chill out a bit, it's taking over too much thinking space and I've got nearly a year til our wedding!

  12. We don't have a Pure Barre in my state, unfortunately. I would love to try it. I've heard great things. Before my wedding last year, I signed up for 6 months of bootcamp...and I fell in love with it. I'm still doing bootcamp 3X a week. I feel stronger than ever. Stick with it! (Hell, you've already paid for it.) YOU CAN DO IT! xo.

  13. @ nicole - Oh, I am sticking with it! The best part about being really cheap is that when I shell out for something, I am determined to USE IT to the max. I knew that the price tag alone would make me get up early in the mornings. I hate wasting money.

  15. I"m getting married this fall and I've started working out for the first time EVER. I actually really like it, which surprised me. I'm doing Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred DVD and taking a pilates class. I'd add yoga in too if I could just find the time... Here's to looking and feeling great on our big days!

  16. I was thinking that exact same thing at the wedding I was at last weekend.

Totally kidding! The Pure Barre will be worth it, you'll definitely feel more confident on your wedding day! Also, I read Zooey Deschanel did those classes to gear up for her wedding, so there's the trendiness factor!

  17. Oh my gosh, those classes are killer! I thought I was going to die after taking my first class!

  18. Rachel, my wedding is three weeks away, and last week I went to my bootcamp instructor and said, "So, what does a girl need to do to tone her arms in four weeks?" so yes, I know exactly what you're talking about!

I stumbled on your blog via your posts about planning your sister's wedding when I first got engaged last year... so I'll take this opportunity to say congratulations, and thanks for sharing all your wonderful crafts and projects with all of us! I hope your wedding day is really really wonderful... and I'm sure your arms will look great regardless ;)

  19. There are totally worse things you could be doing... like obsessing over the weather on the big day. At least this is stress relief and good for you!! Even if you're the only person who cares about your arms, you'll feel better, and that's what counts.

I obsessed over my pasty white skin for my wedding.... :)

  20. @Rachel - YAY! I'm so glad you're sticking with it. Try not to get Madonna arms, okay? Hehe. xo.

  21. i am a runner (off & on for over ten years now, wow!) and in the month leading up to my wedding, i ran alternatingly short & long runs every morning. i did it because i knew that running tones up my stomach quickly, which is MY problem area. and it did. and i was just that much happier with my figure (and the way my dress fit) for the wedding. and it was just one less thing i had to think about on the day of (am i going to look fat-ish in all these photos? or... are my arms :) jiggling in this photo?) so, maybe they hurt now, but you'll have these pictures forever, and you'll always be able to look back at them and say "dammmmn my arms looked good on my wedding day!"

  22. I hope it's the good kind of sore though :) I care about my arms. Although I admit, not as much as I think about my neck. I'm so afraid they would bulge out like a bodybuilder whenever I work out.
