Dumpster chair

Our latest adopted chair ...

{dumpster chair}

Ages ago, D found two beautiful chairs in the dumpster outside our building. Technically, they were next to the dumpster outside our building, which is more appealing but sounds less exciting. They could both use some restoration, understandably, but one of them was in good enough shape that I am using it for the time being.

They originally had black (fake) leather seats, but these had since been covered in maroon fabric and both the fabric and the underlying leather had been torn and badly abused. I pulled off the maroon fabric and covered the leather with a simple green and white seersucker I had lying around, securing it in place with the aid of a staple gun. Our eventual plan is take apart both chairs completely, sand and refinish (not paint!) them and then choose a sturdy fabric for the seats. Hopefully we'll get this done sometime in the next decade.

  2. I saw a chair just like this one next to a dumpster while I was running yesterday. It took all of my self-control not to pick it up and carry it the two miles home in the 95 degree heat. Now I'm regretting that decision- that chair is gorgeous!

  4. This reminds me of the gorgeous Thonet chair that I have in my cellar. I need to finish it. Definitely.

  6. i'm so impressed, not only with your find, but by the amount of luck you've had with dumpster diving. i need to swing by your neck of the woods when i'm in need of a new (to me) piece for my place!

  10. What a great find! And I totally relate to your "sometime in the next decade" statement. I have all the pieces cut for 2 bedside tables - and I cut them in, like, March - and somehow, I can't find the time (motivation, maybe?) to put them together...

  11. I had a chair very similar to these as my desk chair at my school in Brooklyn. It had an ugly orange vinyl fabric covering the "cushion" and inappropriate pencil/pen marks written all over it. I never thought much about the chair, other than that I wished it was more comfortable for those long stretches of paper grading. You, however, have turned those chairs into something quite beautiful! Well done!

  12. GREAT dumpster find! I love the fact that you aren't going to paint the wood. It's such a shame when nice wood gets an unnecessary paint job.
