Indulgences

During the shopping hiatus I went cold turkey on J. Crew. I stonewalled them, deleted their emails without reading them, avoided all stores, threw away the catalogs.

Last week, I allowed myself to peek at the website. There was a sale going on, naturally. But I behaved pretty well.

indulgences-5--09

I did not buy either of those $3000 wedding gowns (no, you didn't miss anything - I'm not getting married - but you really don't have to be throwing a wedding to be tempted by these dresses).

I did buy the sorbet stripe cardigan (okay, I bought two plus a couple of other boring ones), but I feel fine with it, because cardigans are my work uniform and I wear them until they fall apart or end up covered in bleach stains.

Oh, and I know that the Fresh lip gloss did not come from J. Crew and therefore has nothing to do with this post, but I thought I should fess up. I read Sara Christine's post and couldn't resist. It's fabulous and totally worth the cost.

As a side note, men do not understand the importance of lip gloss.

me: I just bought this lip gloss and I'm kind of embarrassed by how much it cost.
d: I'm sure it wasn't that bad.
me: Well, it was $20.
d: (long pause)
d: Is it really huge or something?

And, I completely agree... you don't have to be getting married to be enticed by those JCrew gowns.

  8. I am on a "saveyourself" plan at the moment and trying to either thrift shop or not shop at all. I find myself reading more and creating more.
Lip gloss, now that is certainly hard to resist.

  9. LOL too funny - but my sister swears by some cheap lipgloss that she says lasts forever.

  10. LOL! That guy story is hilarious. When I first started dating Erwin I bought a pair of Adriano Goldschmied jeans and said they cost a lot. He tried to guess.

    He guessed $40.

    They were $200.

  11. you can count one of the dresses as work clothes if you put a cardigan over it, right? yep.

  12. haaa. i've been eyeing that cardigan. but i am resisting the click to jcrew. well, maybe i should just SEE how much it is?

  13. Cardigans are fabulous. I would love to have more of them. They are perfect in all seasons. Wear them at work in air-conditioned offices, or in movie theaters or on chilly evenings in the summer. Wear them the rest of the year as regular attire. And they can be dressed up or down.

  14. I'm nowhere near getting married but I have to admit that I'll head over to J. Crew every once in a while just to look at their wedding gowns-that one on the right has always been my favorite :)

I love their cardigans-their bright yellow striped sorbet one is gorgeous!

  15. God, I just howled! So funny! And the cardigan, well, it's just so bloody adorable, it would have been a sin not to buy them :)

  16. Great purchases! I unsubscribed from J.Crew and that's helped with the impulse spending. Man, they know how to snare a girl though!

  17. Such a typical convo in my household too. Hubs is always surprised with the cost of makeup/skincare/haircare goods. I know what you mean about having to delete the emails and throw away the catalogs....sometimes the tempation is too much. Better to not know!

  18. LOL -- your conversation is hilarious! It's so funny how men try to justify and rationalize what may be pratical only in a woman's world.

  19. ha, yes i did the same thing with jcrew during the hiatus...and i clicked on the sale e-mail this week...trouble.

LOL on the lipgloss. what's the male equivalent??

  20. That lipgloss comment made me laugh out loud too. I have a love hate relationship with J.Crew everytime I get their catalog in the mail because everything is so amazing! I love the cardigan you got :)

  21. I am so tempted to shop for new clothes right now, well, really just shop in general. I did buy some pretty cups for outdoors today though.

  22. HAHAHA! Cute conversation with your boyfriend. They'll just never understand, will they? Hope you LOVE your new Sugar lip gloss as much as I do! xoxo

  23. I totally laughed out loud at that conversation transcript! Fresh lip gloss is TOTALLY worth every penny. I somehow ended up on their consumer test mailing list and got to sample 4 variations on the formula...it was the highlight of my life so far!

  24. You're right. They do not understand. To my husband, it's simply the barrier in being allowed to kiss me when we're going out.

  25. "is it really huge or something?"

    -that's what she said! ;-)
